I was building a new power supply for some amp modules I received. Soft start -> transformer -> rectifier -> bulk caps. No big deal, right? Plugged it all in (no power connected to amp modules yet, just the power supply) with a lightbulb tester, 25W bulb. BRIGHT LIGHT (uh, oh something's wrong). It turns out it wasn't clear in the capacitor datasheets that the mounting bolts on the bottom are connected to the negative pole on the top. Direct short through the negative caps to ground (via the metal chassis).
I didn't even waste a fuse. Solved the problem, everything works perfectly now.
