Something just occurred to me when thinking over a budget build ive had waiting for some time:

Why no paper dome tweeters?

While looking for a paper driver to cover 1k and up (or better) I bought some Visaton FRS5X. Theyre not bad for an SPL limited wide range driver, but the woofers (Mission CP168) could benefit from a driver with more headroom, less THD, or both; depending on playback levels.

So what else is out there? Paper cone/dome (why haven't I seen any paper domes???)

Wide range or tweeter, cone or dome. 2.5" or less. Cheap (<€25 ea.)

Any ideas?

Fabric domes pop out that's for sure (foam behind the dome in a few)

But how much does the response change once pusher in and recovered? I guess it depends on the fabric coating. If any, depending on the model.

Noone seems to tell the relevant info (that I have noticed):

Fabric composition etc

For all I know they could be using kevlar blend 1000 count..

Or just polyester

That's where things get...ambiguous (in my understanding)

So alternatively,

Has anyone got a good suggestion for a good, cheap soft dome, or 2" ish cone tweeter?
(besides SB29...thats the top of my budget @ €30)

Well, there's the reliable old phenolic /paper cone tweeter that many of us can remember from the 70's
Phenolic Ring Tweeter Replacement for AR-4X CTS Marantz and More 8 Ohm

too bad this Peerless isn't still readily available - pretty danged sure it's close to the same model as Bob Fulton used in his amazing little Model 80, and a range of McIntosh's ML series during the early / mid 70's

Peerless India K225 2" Cone Tweeter 4 Ohm

There really is a dearth of drivers in this category - it's more or less got to the point that you need to consider a small fullrange driver - such as Fountex FR58 when thinking about a cone tweeter, and many will not be paper.

There is a waveguide to suit the FRS5X which will probably bring exactly the benefits you want.

If you want to try a different driver and well within your budget, contact Cotswold Sound Systems and buy a pair of their 2.5 inch BMR drivers on clearance. I think you will be impressed.

Curious about your crossover, as this can have a big impact too. First order crossovers I have found to be generally poor.

If there is a waveguide to suit the 2"FRS5X then I am completely naive to it! haha.

As for crossover, I have messed about in Boxsim and IIRC I ended up with 4th order, ill recheck. I have different filters for passive and active XO due to the lack of attenuation around the Fs in the passive version. Fc is about 600Hz. Even so, the little Visaton is SPL limited anyway (loud enough for close listening, but a little close to their max for sound quality I fear)
