Why can't we find XGA or better under 15"?
I know of many laptops that have an LCD display around 11"-14" and have a resolution of 1280x1024 or better.
If I am going the next step and building a projector (instead of using an off-the-shelf LCD panel and a OHP) I want to use the highest resolution LCD panel I can. I mean it might as well be one that would be good for HDTV and the like, don't you think?
I have not seen too many postings here from folks that are using anything over 800x600. I guess this is all being prompted by my use of a 800x600 LCD panel right now, and although nice for watching a movie or two, I would really like something that is a lot closer to what I see on the local store's HDTVs. Is that kind of clarity too tough to do? They make rear projection TVs that look great, so what not front projectors???

Yes this is the main issue for all diy projector people. In my third world country I can' t even find a VGA projection panel 😡 grrrrrrrr
I have a crappy ancient lcd projector with 300 x 200 pixels 😱
In my fuc*ing place customs tax is ******** high, so I can' t get things from main planet. ( for example: Lilliput lcd is 200$ > TAX is ~250$ in this sh*t)
Actually a lot of manufacturers are producing very little lcd screens with SXGA reso and controller in Middle East oops
hehe sorry in Far EAST.
However they are not selling those little mighty lcd screens to us, to customers. They are selling them to the main commercial projector producers. If you really have a GOOD connection with those lcd screen producers you can get one from them IMO 😉

diybuildergroup is going to sell a 10" xga panel.
Its not that hard to find an lcd panel under 15" and high resolution, its hard to find a controller for said panel.

Yeah I too have seen a lot of LCD panels that would be good but nothing to drive the panel with.
The frustrating part to me is the "screen door" effect from any LCD panel and MOST if not all LCD projectors. I have the room in my basement for projecting a 12 foot diagonal picture but anything I have seen looks crappy when blown up to that size.
Even the LCD and DLP front projectors I have seen at work look the same way. I can see the individual pixels. Maybe it is because the projection is so big but I have seen 65" rear projection DLP HDTVs that look great and no pixels. Does this mean I have to sell my car to get video that good? ;-)

Screen door is mainly a problem if you sit too close or you're projecting too big. The larger the projection you want, the more resolution you are going to need to reduce screendoor. The DLP TVs look good becuase they have plenty of resolution for 65". Another way is too put the projection just a little out of focus. This will blur the pixels just a little and reduce the screen door.
The 10" xga panel will be complete with controller.

This discussion is the reason I haven't started a PJ yet. I want 1920x1080 in a 17" or less screen. Right now the only full HD capable 15" is only being used for a dell laptop, and doesn't have a stand alone controller available for it. If one comes around, I might come around too. In the mean time, my personal opinion is that if you want a nice big projection(100" or more), you need 1280x1024 or more.
The 1600x1024 of the SGI 1600SW is very nice, but it's just too expensive to run an older display, to me. Excellent picture though, no doubt.
The progression of technology is on our side though. The more HD content and TV's that enter the marketplace, the more small HD capable displays we'll see(hopefully at lower prices).
For now, if someone can get a working controller going for that 1920x1080 lcd, it would make me start building a PJ.
I spose a free LCD would get me started too.(any takers, lol?)
Until then I'm waiting for 1080i/p compatibility.
Let's keep our fingers crossed.
