why 480x234

Can anyone explain why the 16:9 DVD players use 480x234 resolution? It is the combination of this resolution, along with non-square pixels (.321x.370) that creates the 16:9 physical aspect ratio of the LCD. Why was this combination chosen?

I am working on a project that has to use this LCD, and I am trying to figure out how this resolution was chosen.

TIA

Why?

It ALWAYS comes down to money!

Yields are lower, the smaller you make the cells. More pixels also means a faster controller with more memory, etc. So the smart manufacturer finds out exactly how good his product has to be for the application, then designs it to do that and no more.

In that size screen, and in that application, people can't see more pixels. So why pay for them? As long as your project does not magnify the image, it should work fine. (Just don't try to display a lot of text!)

Now when you stick that LCD in a projector and blow it up 15 times as large, even somebody legally blind can see the giant chunky pixels.

the only thing i can tell you is why are 234 lines at all.

if you search for NTSC signal on google, you would see it is a standard format where 4:3 ratio of image and 30 images per second are shown. But this image is formed using 475 lines moreover. First, half lines are shown, the odd and the even lines are shown alternatively then, the aparent refresh rate is doubled 60hz. it is done so your eyes don´t see the flikering.

if the LCD panels were 300 lines for example, there woud be a image conversion from 475 lines to 300. And it is more difficult to do. But if they are 234 lines (see it is half 475) then you just need to refresh each line twice so all data is shown (there is half resolution anyway but it does not care for such screen sice).

Where i live there is not NTSC. We have PAL here that are 575 lines at all. When we display images on those lcd, we don´t see 100 lines. We lose part of image (some of the lcs have up down buttons so you can choose what part of image do you want to see if you insert PAL to it.

hope it helps you.
