I agree with you that for video playback (not 3D gaming) all cards produce same results.
I'm not bias towards nVidia nor Ati, I just see that nVidia produce better "blacks" than Ati.... must triple check again.
I'm talking about from the s-video output, not VGA.
The chrontel has a design fault where fully overscanned 800x600 (768x576) PAL output has colour dropouts. This is something I was unaware of until I bought the card :-(
Also, the BT output seemed clearer, like it has a better low-pass filter on the luminance output. This could be to do with the board, or the way that the chip has been configured - things like bandwidth can be controlled by software, according to the data sheets.
This may sound stupid, but have you tried lowering the brightness level on the ATi card? Maybe the ATi is set for 7.5IRE black, and the nVidia for 0IRE ("blacker than black").

Newest does not necessarily mean best... the Millennium card I used was made in 1995, but it outputs a fantastic 2D picture.
It's in the quality of the DAC and filters used on the board.
The different black levels could be something as trivial as brightness/contrast/gamma settings.
I never said newer was the best.. i was speaking about Nvidia and ATi i have no experience with Matrox series. im not saying he should get the ABSOLUTE best on the market but a newer more updated version of either card would probably be better than what he has now.I still have my 8500 from 2 years ago and i dont plan to get a new card anytime soon.
Flame-proof suit on.
And why are they being updated so frequently? Could it be to fix the bugs in them?

its all about marketing the more you update the better you appeal to the customers i love to see updates 🙂
Nvidia does it all the time...just look at Counter-Strike they have a MILLION patches...lol

Re: Flame-proof suit on.
anriel is correct though, they have problems with games sometimes(flashing textures, missing text) simple stuff really.
I would whole heardtedly recomend though darkstar getting the 7500 since he is onlywatching DVD's, but stay away from the AIW series, that is where ATI has always had problems time after time.

good luck

ATI 9000
I use an ATI 9000, Rage Pro I think.
I stick a fan in there, then use power strip to boost the engine clock and memory **** by 20%. My Gosh, a whole world of difference in terms of clarity and brightness.
SO it also depends on how smart you are in tweaking your card. Why pay more ?

Re: ATI 9000
I think the 9000 is called atlantis...or is that just the OEM..any who, how much did you pay for it?
