Which Tokin amps should I build?

I have 2 matched pairs of THF 51S and 2 “loosely” matched pairs of 2SK180, all ex Prasi. So I’m trying to decide which amps I should build with them. Some of you guys have built lots of these SIT amps so I’m wondering if you have any stand out favourites ?

And before you ask ZM, they will not be going to your disposal facility 🤣

room, speakers, SPL habits?

wanna follower ( so you need oomph preamp) or you wanna amp with gain

wanna proper build fun, or you wanna SMPS quickie (everyone these days is scared of some mild proper electricity and hardware ....... :rofl: )

hm....... thinking when I'm going to see PL (or even FW) amp with switcher PSU ........ :devilr:

@zm; I’d probably be using it / them in an efficient active system, so probably driving a mid range horn / Fostex bullet tweeter. A follower is certainly an option for me as I will have a valve gain stage I could pair it with. These devices deserve a proper linear PS I think!
PS. Your SissySIT is on my shortlist.

plenty of follower options lately around, Ben Mah's first coming to my mind

not pushing mine (Lazy), I tend to make ones having all bells and whistles, thus some more complicated

now, regarding mentioned SUSY - take in account - bridged ones are having more power and by nature - killing even harmonics

reckon compression drivers are nicer when fed with some Sugar

Yes Ben’s follower is also on my radar. And your point about SUSY is well made. A bit of sugar is definitely welcome.

As I wrote in the SuSy T. PuckFo thread, it's very easy to add some second harmonic sugar by biasing the two halves of the amp with a tiny little bit of imbalance. Some people prefer less sugar, some like it sweeeeet.

I find that a choke loaded follower amp is a relatively simple build and really sounds nice. I have one with 2SK180s (https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/mo-chokes-building-2sj28-2sk180-monoblocks.370479/) which puts out about 15 watts and am currently using it in my bi-amp speaker system. It works well powering either the bass or high sections. It is particularly good in the higher frequencies. I use JBL professional sound speaker components, so not a lot of power is required.

My design includes a choke loaded VFET voltage amp stage, but you can use a different voltage gain stage or preamp.

fact is - with THF51 you can get most with least voltage across (Sissy arrangement being exception from rule, due to special principle) while others are demanding somewhat higher Uds for comparative THD

anyhow, as Pa told us already (ooomptheenth times) - take any and take as much you can, that's investment in your own Legoland

in least likely scenario - that you don't like results ....... sell them, use (amp) hardware for something else

now, situation is that pretty much big ground is covered already - there are shown constructions ( verified) in all possible manners, spanning from 5W SE to 40+ SE and from 15W to 50+W PP amps ...... also from minuscule THD to THD Generator levels

what's not to like, applicable as 2N3055 :clown:

Thinking primarily SE no NFB and no degen, minimum power and maximum rejoice :rofl:

Maybe save a pair for the au contrare: XA252? I did sell my pucks, but life is long.

so, what's gonna be your next fix, dunno - decide

you can play with whatever you want, that doesn't need to be unobtanium or parts made of preputium

fun is what counts...... . with little brain ( or with just a smidge of proper Managerial spirit, to recognize adequate project), good amps and preamps are made also with great ideas and with generic parts

example - Nico Ras made both line and phono preamps exclusively using just BD139/140 parts; go figure

wanna great A Class amp, no Papaland, no tricky JFets, 'fets, SITs, signal Iron ....... parts obtainable form nearest Tobacco Store - make MF A1 OS, properly

or go to Salvation Army (have that in Norway?) or Junkyard or whatever - search for anything with toobz and dive in

fun guaranteed for a year
