Hello DIY friends.
Who can give me an advice. Which preamplifier should I prefer or which one sounds better in combination with a Aleph 2. The balanced line stage or the Aleph P 1.7?
I would like to build one of both and need a small decision help.

They sound about the same. BZLS is alot easier, but you get some losses on undriven side when converting unbalanced to balanced (the Aleph doesn't care though).
I say go for the BZLS! (This is what most people do).🙂

hello Mads,
thanks for your advice. The Aleph P preamplifier does not seem to be very popular among the DIY´lers, in the comparison to the BZLS .
From where do you know that both pre amps sound almost similarly , have you both already heard?
Thank you
Martin

Hi,
I would choose for the X-BOSOZ.. seems very popular..

It seems that it has all the flavours like bass, mid, high, openess, clarity in it..
Good luck,

Mad K,
Do you have any experience with the BZLS and Aleph using balanced connections ? Does it affect the sound much with those different output levels ?

I recall Nelson saying this in an earlier thread

Yes, I use BZLS and A30 balanced. I have both balanced and unbalanced sources.
It doesn't affect the sound per see, it affects the CMRR. This figure I wouldn't loose any sleep over😉
Build the BZLS! it's simply wonderful 🙂
and it only gets better when you use Balanced equipment.
a very flexible treat from Mr. Pass.
and if i can do it, anyone can! 😉

Here an inside view of the BZLS. Maybe someday X-grade 😉
You might see some resemblance in this pre amp. The design was copied from those DIYMANIA.NET guys. They make great stuff
🙂
I'm trying to make two versions of this pre amp. But the front panels havent arrived yet so you have to wait some time before i can show the completed amp.

X-BZLS
Two years ago I built the BZLS or BOSOZ.
Then about a year ago I built the P1.7 using some of the BZLS parts.
About 3 months ago I re-built the BZLS using silver Kimber hook-up wire and some parts from the P1.7.
I re-built the BOSOZ because I wanted to upgrade the caps and the P1.7 uses twice the amount or more than the BOSOZ.
One month ago I converted the BZLS or BOSOZ to Henrik's X-BOSOZ version (sort of). It is a very simple conversion.
I have both single ended and balanced sources into a balanced 3BST Bryston amp.
All of the preamps and configurations sounded very good.
My preference is the X-BOSOZ by a large margin.
Fine detail leaps out without being dry edgy or hard.
Last weekend I converted back to the BOSOZ configuration and after about 2 minutes I knew the X-BOSOZ sounded superior in my system and I immediately changed back to the X version.
I was struggling for words to adequately describe the difference in sound with the X configuration until I read NP's description of the sound quality of the X-Aleph power amp.
His description accurately describes my impressions of the X-BOSOZ preamp. Please see Nelson Pass's article "Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate" on the Pass site in the articles section.

Nice job Nick!! Looks great. My next project is going to be an Aleph P1.7. I considered the BOZ but with all the work involved an machining the chassis I'm going all the way on this one. I will also incorporate Jens digital attenuator into it. I am running an Aleph L right now and it sounds great but its time to move on to something balanced thats as good as the amplifiers are.....

Ignatz,
Did you build the XBOSOZ from
this schematic ?

Yes, Ignatz has used just that circiut.
In my oppinion this preamp circiut is way better than just the BOSOZ.
As I have mentioned before, the high value of the outputcaps in my XBOSOZ is because of the 120 Ohm inputimpedance at my XSOZ. You can get by with only 1 uF if Your load is over 10K.
You can see some pics here:

Henrik,
I looked at your (simple) layout and must say : clever design !
If i'm correct you don't use the zeners at the input ?
Because the shop where i bought most of the components wanted to sell at a minimum of 50, i now have some spare parts for building an extra X-BOSOZ 😉
Those Gryphon caps look great ! I only know the brand from hifi magazines. Those amps always look ok to me.
I also like those TO-220 resistors. No need for special heatsinks, just mount the PCB on the floor of the cabinet. Can't buy those resistors in Holland. (or i could place some parallel
)
That 33uF cap : special one ?

Henrik,
sorry if i've overlooked some threads, but how about unbalanced in and balanced out ? Do you get the same levels at - out and + out ?
I don't have that kind of money (yet 😉 ) to buy equipment with balanced outputs.
Maybe you have some numbers on those values ?
