Hi,
if You´re looking for something sounding and mesasuring extremely well, and beeing very flexible regarding cartridge choice, input impedance and gain, and which is easy to build with a high chance of success, You might want to have a look at the PlatINA/RG1 phono stages.

Hi, There is only one phono amp to really consider if you want MC only. It is the most flexible, adjustable (impedance & gain) costs about $150 to $200 to build. Very easy build, "even I could do it & that's saying something" and is way better that the B/H, Pass, EAR834 etc, I have owned all three and they all gone.
THAT'S THE AD797 phono amp found on the A/K site.
Listening to it now with my Temaad Merlin 12"Titanium arm & Koetsu Rosewood Red, absolutely stunning combination.
Cheers😀😀😀
Hmm, pls send a link

I have the PCBs and kits if needed.

Thanks, this this the one I mentioned in my post. Its really better than the best.

Not if you want the performance. The AD797 is very special. LIGO uses them! A discrete op-amp is unlikely to get even close. It misses the boat for what I personally want from a phono stage but should do the job nicely.
Perhaps if you list exactly what your belief system thinks makes a good MC stage (and the MC you are using) then we can match those up. There are a lot of transparent MC designs out there to meet every topology you can fetishize.

Build it to believe it.Hmmmm, i get warning signs seeing opamps in the build. Can these be swapped to discrete opamps.

I would do a search for anything from Ernest Borbley, the ones I have heard were very good and dynamic. Although finding good JFETs is getting hard these days. The last bunch of J74/K170 we got from Linear were a bit noisy, ok at higher signal levels but not in a MC pre.
Hi,
when its about price some of the PlatINA/RG1 implementations compared well with >10.000$ commercial phonos. 😉 🙄🙄
But then the device still has to suit Your taste, budget and building capabilities ... and not to forget the sourceability of parts.
I wouldn´t recommend devices or kits anymore that require obsolete and hard to source parts ... not to mention that those parts are typically hyped and overprized or faked anyway ... or require matching ... and so on and so on.

The reason I want to build is that i have the YBA on loan. Yes its fabulous, but a bit laid back. This might have to do with the lack of settings an my cart is not optimal. Ortofon MC30ll super.
I use that Boozhound or Le Pacific or how else we can call it with my own PCB.

Want to try that AD797 now also when there is so many good opinions about it 🙂 But at A/K there is no schematic, only PCB as i understand. ANd i also wonder how would you guys compare AD797 vs LME49720
I will make my own PCBs with latest parts etc 🙂

It does, because there are many levels of phono amp builds. The B/H is a good build if you are looking to compete with commercial phono's up to $1000, the Pass & EAR maybe $2500 to $3000, but not $5500. So it may clarify what the reader is trying to achieve as from what I read his phono amp is pretty darn good
Cheers
You appear to be of the belief that the more something costs in high end audio, the better it is. This is not true.
High End Audio Cost vs Quality is not always a correlation.
And there is also no absolute for what is actual quality.
