which was the best player built by Philips ?
850 ? 880 ? 960 ?
850 has large alpanumeric display but bitstream ?
880 has silvercrown but no alpanumeric.
960 has very small display and which DAC ?
Did Philips make a transport ?
Is there an alternative transport / player on the used market around 300$ ?

Only the DAC chip and parts around it are omitted. Both CD880 and CD882 are based on the same chassis and PCB's etc. They are the same.
850 ? 880 ? 960 ? All the same ?
By the way in my collection I have a 830 and via headphones ( Sennheiser HD430 & Beyer DT990) it sounds a little too warm, the mids are not open, kind of depressed, if I listen its like I can not breath, there's some pressure on my breast, don't know how to explain.
There is the plain 1541A inside.
Also I have 304mkII and 650 and both sound open and relaxed.
They have 1541 without A inside.

Did not compare yet via digital out.
In a week I will get the 880.

If you are going to use it only as a transport Philips 304MKII might be the best of them.
CDM 1 is suppose to be better than CDM 1/MKII.
I only don't know which of them sits in CD 960.

Be sure to make the SPDIF output right, it is the weakest spot in most Philips cdplayers. A better transformer will do wonders.
Even better; make that DAC inside the cdplayer without using SPDIF and go with I2S. The very best approach if you ask me.

Here you can see a lot of nice pictures of the CD880 interior.
One thing puzzles me: the Internal ROM-software link shows a picture of an IC I do not have in my CDD882.
Is it part of the DAC?

Tube output stage board comes next. 100x160mm
