I have for the last year(s) been playing and designing a considerable amount around the Raspberry Pi for use in my system. My system is all integrated into one chassis and utilized in a way in where the amplifier portion is controlled by the Pi as well. I have my own designed and built DAC that rides like a hat and also designed my own power supply for the Pi in the event of shutdown or power loss. I can at a minimum say that Volumio is a second for me (tied with Kodi) and that Raspian Lite combined with Shairport-sync (compiled from sources) is vastly superior in terms of overall performance. The software is by far the weakest link in the system. Using Volumio or Kodi both crash and have very strange quirks about them. My bro in law has been using shairport-sync and airfoil for years on his system every day all day. Use a DAC with hardware volume and make sure to configure that setting on it or you'll get dithering noises. I'll have a power supply for the raspberry pi on sale soon that solders directly to the 40 pin header that takes care of all the power cycling and supply issues that plague the Pi. Additionally, my supply will have two breakout headers for multimedia buttons (if you use Volumio), controlling a relay, LED and power switch. When I get a batch from assembly, I'll post all about it.

I would say load Volumio on it and you then also have a streaming device and can codify your digital music library.

I was given a Raspberry Pi 3+ and I have been contemplating using it for autio processing, i.e., receiving audio file form a server, performing DSP (crossover, equalization), and outputting the results into DAC.
I am wondering whether using any of them is advantageous over a generic distribution. I wold like to select a distribution that has a support community behind it so that I do not have to deal with different distribution quirks.
Any help in this regards would be appreciated.

the pi3 with raspbian is a good starting point - no hassle to get going.

The pi3 runs at less than 10% cpu usage when playing music, so no problems about "muscle". The usb "problem" is theoretical rather than audible.

So far, my favorite software by far is MoodeAudio; practically plug'n play.
Since you already have your Rpi, all you need is a DAC hat, the Allo Boss DAC being a crowd favorite, and will set you back around $65.
Just download the ISO image form Moode's site, burn to an SD card, plug it into your Rpi and you're ready to go.
And the sound is great.

First time boot using volumio with my smart phone was
sasses. I have listen muusic from a usb storage via headphone(no HAS dac).
After reset(unplugging power supply) i can't see the volumio Wifi again.
In able to see this i must burn the image file again.
What i do wrong? 😕

The phone jack of raspberry pi is really very noisy. The simple USB DAC is mostly powered by a Cmedia chipset ~ -70dB THD+N
To get the most out of your Raspi you better get a HifiBerry DAC ...

OT. Except maybe piCorePlayer. piCore installs into RAM, very little writing to SD card, so only a very small chance of SD card corruption.

Hi Toni, yes i know but is my first step in Pi.
Is the HAS the best choisse or a quality usb card?
I want to keep the possibility for a rotary switch for volume control and a cheap 2X lcd.
I want a stand alone player, no internet, maybe inside an amplifier.
A usb sound card also keep the posibillity for an Asus tinker latter.😉

Using a raspberry pi compatible HAT which uses the PCM5122 you can control volume fully digital. AFAIK a hifiberry DAC+ or DAC+ pro uses this chip. I have developed a piece of software to control the volume using a rotary switch. Its easy to add infrared control...
