I sent out a few RFQ for 200 of each 2SK389, 2SJ109 for a possible group buy.
I asked for quotes on GL and BL binning.
Idss BINNING:
GL: 2.6-6.5ma
BL: 6-12ma
V: 10-20ma
Will post pricing.
Most of my designs are 5 ma bias. Would the GL be more linear or lower noise than the BL at this range? My experience is to avoid usage near the top of the Idss bin range.

SY said:No, I'm arguing that we should choose devices based on performance in a given circuit, not nominal notions of "complimentarity." Remember, I'm the guy who mixes pFETs with tubes!
BTW, congratulations on noting the Latin palindrome. Ten more points if you notice the other features of it. The literal meaning is something like "the farmer Arepo holds the wheel."
Well if you're building a complementary circuit, using the transistors that have been designed as complementary pairs are usually the best way to go. As noted previously, one nice thing about a complementary circuit is that it becomes much easier to dispense with coupling caps. But not everyone likes complementary circuits....
On the palindrome, there are various features. On the numeric side, there are five words, each with five letters. On the alphabetic side, there is a pattern of three consonants and two vowels (also syllables) alternating with the converse. After that I'm pretty mystified.
Write the words one on top of the other. I love symmetry- we're in the same boat in that respect.
OK, I almost had it... five words of five letters suggests a square, but I didn't take the last step.
The first letter of each word makes the first word, the second letter of each word makes the second word, etc. I don't think there are too many other palindromes that meet these parameters....

Backwards, forwards, up, down, some cool symmetry. Bridged complementary Circlotrons come to mind. The cheat is the use of the proper name Arepo. From what I understand, this was found as a graffito in Pompei.
OK, enough OT, my apologies to all.

ok I think I've found a source for those Toshiba JFets (but I don't know if they are BL GR or V)
Are those correct prices?
2SK170: 0.68€
2SJ74: 1.00€
2SK389: 1.88€
2SJ109: 4.01€
2SK146GR:4.69€
2SJ73: not available

Hope nobody minds me squizing in here with a question
Regarding fets I have been looking for some J2sk147 for the El-Cheapo MM/MC RIAA. I have googled and searched this forum and didn't come up with anything usefull. What is the story of this device, discontinued? If anyone could name a proper substitute I will be happy🙂 I couldn't even find a datasheet!

2sk147
vacuumstate.com reports discontinued on 2sk147.
As far as I know most discrete jfets are scarce i.e. discontinued.
Specially all those nice ones from toshiba from yesteryear 🙂
Google for 2sk147.pdf and you will find at least 2 sheets.
If this fails I could mail you a sheet

regarding 2SK389:
leave the substrate lead open

there are better devices out there (2SK369)

I just happened to find 10 of those at a small local supplier, and bought them right away. He also had 45 of the 2sk389, 35 BL version and 10 V version. My question is, should I order themthere are better devices out there (2SK369)
all? I could offer some of them to the diy'ers on this forum, nonprofit offcourse. I know they are not easy to get, but not excactly how hard they are to find. Advise needed, if this could be helpfull to someone🙂
All the best

Here are all the complementary pairs that appear on Toshiba's website, arranged in pairs:
*only minimum value given in datasheet, not typical, so it's probably not as different from 2SJ103 as it looks.
Most of these don't seem to have been mentioned here, and Google reveals little or no information above the datasheet. Some of them don't appear to be intended for audio and are enhancement mode, which isn't very helpful (all the one with higher, matched Vgds, annoyingly). Any compelling reason not to use any of the others? The most popular 2SK170/2SJ74 also happen to be more expensive, so if others are usable I would rather buy them.
Code:
Vgds/V Yfs/mS Ciss/pF
2SK170 40 22 30
2SJ74 25 22 32
2SK246 50 1.5* 9
2SJ103 50 4 18
2SK364 40 28 30
2SJ104 25 30 105
2SK330 50 4 9
2SJ105 50 4 18
2SK366 40 28 30
2SJ107 25 30 105
2SK370 40 22 30
2SJ108 25 22 105
2SK982 60 >100 55
2SJ148 60 >100 73
