I'm pretty sure your in-wall wires are shielded by bricks or concrete and The wires that come from the power station are shielded by air or earth if buried. Do You believe in Santa Claus ? I not.
Shield in this case is about blocking electrical signals in the air. Not about insulation or mechanical protection.
Almost all shields are metallic like copper, steel or aluminum. Different metals and shield construction work better at different interference frequencies.
