I've used the 5" Silver Flute midwoofer about 20 years ago in my second self developed speaker. It was distributed at that times in Germany branded as Omnes Audio MW5. Developed a comparably large ML-TQWT for it that gave surprisingly deep and precise bass, crossed with series xover to a cheap but nice Monacor tweeter. Have derived and bulid then several variants, e.g. with a smaller TML for the sister of my wife, bookshelf in CB as rear speakers for a friend and another variant with Seas tweeter for a forum member because everyone liked the sound. Unfortunately the range of
Silver Flute drivers are not more available in Europe since a long time. I would prefer them in every case compared to the SB Acoustics entry line with the plastic baskets...

I wonder why people have forgotten drivers like the Seas Ernx or the Urnx.
I had à Proac D15 and the woven woofer unit from the Excel line was better for the sound than their magnésium line.
Ernx...what to say as well, copied by SB....with better motor. Not saying the Silvère line from Peereless, à shame it doesn t exist but if you order à trillion.

Yep, for dual 7" bass the Seas ERNX are a very good option. Would prefer them over the SB acoustics standard range because - as you mentioned - the SBs are not the best choice for woofer duty. Another possibility is Wavecor 182 drivers, but they have become expensive...
Ah yes Wavecor, I want to trigger but they are too much expensive for made in China products whatever the engineerering madeoutside is good. I mean it is not SB Acoustics prices.
It is actually a ribbon with a horn front end, it is not a real horn but rather a deep waveguaid with efficiency gain.Metal driver below will need some taming around their too near resonance. You have some nice containder like the Dayton 8" . The 10" from the Discovery is attracting. The high cut off needed is challenging for the baffle step.
I find interresting but risky the mix of mid dome and a horn above. I certainly try to cut off the higher I can vis à vis of the dome dispersion in the highs...
I wanted to input about Seas ERNX or the woven URNX serie, but I fear a little about the efficienty...
The SB paper sounds goods but lacks of life in the bass...
That is nice to see some designs w/o the expensive Bliesma as well ! 🙂
Really my 2 cents, I find the bass driver to be a casse-tête choice as well...
Below 4000hz I wouldn't use the Fountek but above 4000hz it has super low distortion and good resolution.
There is hardly a midrange driver that plays so high....
The combination is really successful, but before I lean too far out of the window, I have to listen to more music with it.
Have you already heard the SB23NRXS45?
It was a tough decision between the Dayton RS225P-8A and the SB23NRXS45. AJ Horn (simulation) told me that the SB needs at least 60 liters and plays low but already drops off at 40 Hz. The Dayton plays linearly down to 30 Hz and only needs just under 50 liters.
The low distortion of the SB Acoustics, especially K2, is impressive, especially as I could have it for € 80,--. But the HiVi does distort at this point just like the Dayton, so I thought, it fits.
yup , well known unit, not usable below 3 to 3.5 K hz.
I have the SB23 black alumin unit. paired with a 3" cone as a DIY classic BBC cabinet work. I should have bougth the paper as the cut off was above the Schrodinger frequency (it was passive filter, so taming metal bass driver is costly). But their 8" has know to miss punch.
I used sealed as it was for a bedroom.

Wavecore has been my main speaker for several years.Yep, for dual 7" bass the Seas ERNX are a very good option. Back then, the whole kit was available for €700.

Sorry to ask as it is off topic. their tweets are famous,, how did you like that aw11 (iirc) in that kit, please ?
AW11, The tweeter was something special because it plays up to 30Khz despite its oversize.Sorry to ask as it is off topic. their tweets are famous,, how did you like that aw11 (iirc) in that kit, please ?
The silk dome was manufactured in Germany.
I was very excited at the time, but the bottom line is that it's a typical silk dome tweeter. It is not annoying and is rather restrained.
I still have the speaker, so it's not annoying.
Only the loud bass was a problem, but since I've improved the room acoustics, that no longer bothers me.
Maybe other silk domes from Seas or ScanSpeak can do something similar...
An friend of mine thinks the speaker is one of the best I've had.
Did you cut away "the ugly" or is it just missing?![]()
If you still have questions or suggestions, please!
