Which amp for my subs?

I have two AV12 subs with crazy excursion (46mm p-p) when there is plenty of power to throw at them (500 watts into 4 ohms) and all my simulations show that it actually needs that kind of power to move to xmax, unlike others drivers like the Peerless XLS and Shiva which can reach their limits with 100 or 200 watts, depending on the box.

Here it is:

My subs

This is a problem as it's expensive to get this much power into 2 subs. I'd like some suggestions on how to do it on a budget. It seems like whatever I do, I'm likely to have to spend AUD $800 if I:

- get plate amps or
- get a PA amp like the Behrringer Europower or a 2ndhand Crest (or was it crest) ... both costing about AUD $800
- build from a kit (either aussie amps or ESP)

Any / all suggestions welcome!

I know Germany is not Oz - although that doesn't seem to deter some visitors from wearing sandals here in mid-winter! - but I just bought a studio amplifier from a German internet music store that might be the sort of thing you are after. It cost 149 euros (roughly Aus$250). I bought it to drive a Hsu Research TN1220 subwoofer down to its 16hz cutoff frequency.

The (English) specs claim it can supply 400W bridged-mono at 0.1% THD into a 4 ohm load. I haven't verified this, but it seems plausible when you feel the weight of the unit. Everything else has looked good so far.

This particular amplifier is made for the music store, I believe, in China judging by the styling, the components I have looked at, the "English"-only manual, its particular grammatical fracturing, its typography - and even the smell of the unit in its first few hours of use. If you can't fancy ordering from Europe, I bet the manufacturer might make a similar unit for someone else closer to you.

If you can't use this suggestion, perhaps it might lead to others!

The second sounds good but I want to avoid shipping an amp from overseas unless there is a very very good reason to do so. If anything goes wrong, how can I get it fixed?
Since these amplifiers are made by a Chinese contracter for sale under a store brand, you might be able to buy them locally under a different label.

I had a look inside the S-150 amplifier I bought. A pretty impressive piece for the money. I will try to take and post some pictures.

Are you wanting to buy or build? If you want to build, I
ll send you a copy of the schematic from Silicon Chip Magazine and a place to get boards from, also in OZ. I got 2 boards shipped to the US for 50.00 US... The amp is deathly quiet and lots of power. I have 12in. shivas in a 4 cu ft. box with 15 in. passives... Well, these amps will produce much more than I'LL ever need!!!!!!!!

Give me your e-mail and I'll send it to you If you want to buy, I don't really have any good advice, sorry.....
