Hi Frank,
Thanks. That's the worrying part about these tubes.
They are'nt cheap to begin with. Again because I'm
using 2 per amp. Am tempted to go with TJ's but they
are about twice the price of Shuguang in my homeland.
BTW, have you tried the Shuguang 300BA or 300B-98 ?
If so how do they sound ?

You might want to consider the JJ 300B, if current production is anything like the ones I bought in 2001 timeframe. Still working just fine after at least 6 years of relatively steady use.

Thanks Kevin for the recommendation.

I once heard the JJ's playing in an audio shop.
If I remembered correctly, the JJ's frequency
spectrum was more towards the mids & high.
Not so much warmth but then again it could be
the amps & the rst of the components.

Likely the amps and other components in the system. In my amplifier they are very nice sounding with great highs, palpable mids, and authoritative bass. Very well balanced sound I would say. The difference between these tubes and a pair of vintage WE I evaluated with an eye to purchasing was small enough that I did not get the WE.

I can only sayI've been using the EH gold successfully for a year with no problems. They sound better than the cooking Chinese stuff, but even those have been reliable so far.

I'd like to know what comparable DHT sounds "as good or better" for $5 to $25.

You'd have difficulty in even getting a 813 for that money, and if you compare like for like you'd need to be getting a good 8 - 10 watts out per triode.

Don't you think that if there were a better choice than the 300b for less, then everyone with ears would be using them?

Pretty much my take on things too. Don't have a lot of exposure to the EH gold, but know people who use it and say it is fine. Certainly reasonably priced and reliable.

I am preparing the build of the Tubelabe SE with 300B's.
So far, the options I am going for are:

JJ 300B @ $219 for matched pair
http://www.jj-electronic.com/pdf/300 B.pdf

The EH-300B @ $175 for a matched pair
http://www.ehx.com/2008/

and the Full Music 300B @ $285 for a matched pair
http://www.tube-fullmusic.com/products/en-product.htm

There are people starting to report quality problems with JJ tubes. Not sure if this a trend or just a couple of people with a bad unit.

Can anybody comment on the Full Music 300B series ?

The Electro-Harmonix tubes are assembled in the USA, but the tube parts come from China, Japan and Russia. It's all about the quality of the base products and the quality in the execution.

There are some great things made in China. If the company that gets things fabricated in China is only driven by the mighty dollar, they wont care about the quality. That's why we get a lot of junk from China.

Shuguang is owned by LG/Phillips for example 🙂

I have seen a lot of posts saying the tubes have "Made in USA" stamp on them. Maybe it does not apply to all tubes.

Does EH own a tube factory in Russia or do they have them built by other manufacturers ?

EH is one of the many New Sensor Electronics brands, others being Sovtek, Tungsol, and Mullard (Mullard in North America only). Most of these tubes are manufactured at Expo-Pul, the plant owned by New Sensor in Saratov, Russia. (IIRC the former Reflektor Saratov plant) None of these tubes are assembled in the USA - but they are tested and matched here. I have never seen any one of these tubes marked with "Made in USA" despite selling many over the years. All are clearly marked "Made in Russia."
