Hello Evryone,
Well i have finally define my project, a 3 way in active filtering by minidsp nanoavrHDA.
I have already :
- medium PHL 1140, from 400/500 Hz to 2 kHz
- tweeter audax tw034 (it will be replaced by an AMT ESS Heil in the future)
Can you give me some advice for the woofer ? a 15" into 120/130 Litres from 35/40 Hz to 400/500 Hz, and not too expensive 😉 Of course TAD or GPA would be great but .... !
Thank you in advance !

The RCF L15/55K is a fantastic sounding driver. It produces very textured and rhythmical sounding bass and has lovely tone. Why it is still in production and much loved by bass guitarists for over 30 years. It has a high force factor and moderate moving mass.
The Faital Pro 15H520 was seleced in the Tower XL thread. Good bass in a modest volume (~ 160liter) cabinet

The popular FaitalPro 15PR400 is lower cost and produces deeper bass, but need a larger cabinet. Humble Homemade Hifi used it in Calpanos

Sadly, no european retaillers for thoses one 🙁
They seems really great....
Thanks jtgofish but a guitar bass driver is not really what Im looking for 🙂
Yes it is a pro audio driver but that does not mean it can't be used for domestic audio.
He gave you a low distortion driver that he uses for his BG, not a BG driver. My current rig is a Beyma 15G40 (soon to get a 6" as well as I play ERBs a bit now) and before that it was a JBL 2225. I owned a lot of these JBLs and the later 2226 and they excellent and I ran them in home systems for a long time until I got the AE TD drivers.but a guitar bass driver is not really what Im looking for
Moral; don't simply discount a driver because someone else uses it in an application that doesn't interest you. If I want my BG rig to have a distortion / effect of some sort, I'll add it in electronically, not rely on the driver to provide it.
Hello,
You are right. Sorry. My apologise to jtgofish. I hope I have't "hurt" you. I'm a newbe in speakers driver. I will look more to the RCF L15/55K and do some simulation.
Brett, from all you have listen and listed, what is your opinion about vintage jbl, beyma 12G400 ? And well can I assume you find the AE TD better than the others ?
I'm completty agree with your last sentence, that's type of drivers I'm looking for 🙂
Thank you 🙂

Is it an active system? What are the xo slopes? Do you use a sub with? Are you a bass head? What sort of bass levels are you expecting?
Hello,
Yes Active crossover IIR with midsp nanoAVR HDA. The objective will be to avoid sub with a good 15", F3 at 40Hz I'm a little bass head. Good level and amount of bass is "required". I'm mostly listen rock, or thing based on rock, pop-rock, eltro-rock, and so on. A music without bass is like a good meat without a good wine 😉
Thank you

I use the dayton 12" hf subwoofer to 500hz w/48db per octave. I know it sounds strange but I tried pro driver and aurum cantus 10“. The dayton was not only vastly superior in the bass, but better on the top end too to my ear. I would recommend a slightly overdamped sealed alignment. I'm experimenting right now with vented and it's lower of course but a little sloppy. I can't tell you about off axis response, but it may beam a touch at 500. I'll get a mic on it one of these days.
The PHL 1140 is a great midrange driver. It is also around 98db sensitivity. In my experience you should be trying to match a driver like that with a woofer with similar sensitivity.hence my suggestion of the RCF 15 inch but there are many other pro type drivers that would suit.Faital Pro would also be worth considering.
Or something that lies sort of half way between pro type woofers and domestic ones like the Fostex FW305 or the PHL woofers [perhaps too obvious?].

If one 12" Dayton RSS315HF-4 is good.... two counter-force mounted in a sealed cabinet must be better. (6.8 ohms in series connection)

Hello,
The PHL1140 after linearisation will be more 96 db from what I know.
I have do some simulation about the RCF L15/55K, a good woofer for small sized box ... but doesn't go deep enough for me.
About the PHL 5021m, I'm "afraid" about the high MMS 162g and low sensitivity.
I will do a sim about the fostex fw305 🙂
I will look, but well, really want a 15" 😉
thank you 🙂

Getting a typical domestic woofer to integrate with a high sensitivity midrange is the problem. That is why in pro audio the common approach is a mid/woofer like the RCF and either use E.Q. to boost the low or a sub.The RCF responds very well to a 6db boost at about 35Hz.
Consider the ratio of force factor [BL] which indicates efficiency and accelaeration of the motor system to moving mass [ Mms] and you will see why drivers like the RCF L15/554K sound so good. Most domestic drivers simply don't compare because they tend to have both higher moving mass and lower force factor-all to gain a bit more low bass through greater excursion.

I'd look to the Faital Pro 15H500 or 15H501.. about the right Vas vs. Fs and good excursion for an active-eq implementation.

Beyma have some really nice drivers to.
I use 4 subwoofers at home, each with one SM115K in 140 liters. F3 at ~38 Hz.

I would look at the BMS 15”. Shorting rings for low distortion, and the neo models will go to the depth you want, in smaller boxes than you are requesting.
I was casting around for 15" speakers a while ago and found that Troels Graveson uses Faital Pro 15PR400 in his latest OB speaker,The Faital Pro 15H520 was seleced in the Tower XL thread. Good bass in a modest volume (~ 160liter) cabinet

I know that you need to trust your own ears but there is no way that I can audition all the speakers that Troels has listened to. So I bought 4 of these beauties (2 per channel) for my own OB design. They cross over at 250Hz, 6dB per octave to an 8" widerange.. I am very pleased with performance and have had nothing but positive feedback on bass quality. So I recommend them.
Hello Evryone,
Thank you for your proposal.
The 12PR400 required a more larger/taller boxer than I can.
I will look at the faital and BMS neodyne more closely.
Other contender could be Audax PR380M0 (but a limited Xmax !!) and Davis 40RC15. Any opinion about thoses ?
