Been out of the driver market for a while now. I know some companies have popped up since I was actively building speakers.
So with that in mind, will you give me your recommendation for a 10" driver for home theater?
My mains only run at 85db 1w1m so efficiency is not important.
I would like to keep the box\tube small\short. I will be driving the speaker with a PartsExpress (no boost) plate amp.
Since I may end up running the sub with music, please tell me if you think a driver is worthy to be matched for music only with the Magnepans.
Thanks a bunch.

Go look at the Lambda Acoustics....incredible SQ subs....Lambda Acoustics
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Emailed Lambda for shipping cost but still havent heard back from them. : (
I ended up auditioning a Sunfire True sub that a friend is selling for $500. That thing is a repository for one tone bass if Ive ever heard it.
So I went and snagged my parents sub which I made for them. A PE plate amp with an old Audio Concepts 12. SOOOOOO much more tonal. The only thing it was lacking was the extreme low end.
Since I didn't get many recommendations for 10's. Are there not allot of good 10's to be had? Shall consider a 12 again?
I'm not asking for you all to make a decision for me. Just help me out with some brands that I may not know about.
I'm familiar with Peerless, Audax, Lambda (now), adire, ScanSpeak, Focal, Eton, the NHT, Morel, Seas, Vifa, etc.
Just not many of the 'off the wall' brands.
Thanks again.

There is a guy here at thisd link selling 2 L:ambda 10" subs for 70 bucks each....Lambda, Adire Audio, E Design are good brands..Peerless 10" are very good as well, but the Lambdas have the best SQ and are very loud to 500 watts...
The guys from Lambda is operating solo, so it does take him awhile...Try also www.stryke.com

Peerless XLS
The Peerless XLS 10 inch driver is very good. I have built one for a friend. The enclosure is very compact and it goes deep and loud. We used a Parts Express Plate amp.
Cost and performance wise I think this may be hard to beat easily. It's a no frills driver . No flashy add on's to make it look attractive. Works really well - you can't go wrong.
Plenty of info about enclosures etc on the web site.
Cheers.
Go to www.d-s-t.com/main/index.htm
Select " Engineering " on the left pane and then go to
Application note for Peerless XLS subwoofer drive units.

The Peerless looks like what I may be going with.
The only question I have is how one adds the extra 200g of weight to the radiator?
From what I read and would like to confirm, to get a flat responce one needs to have a total of 600g of weight on the radiator. The stock radiator from Madisound is 400g.
Thanks

sorry for coming in so late.
1. before you add mass to a speaker please know that while increasing the Mms (Mmd) of a speaker lowers the F3 and Fs it will seriously reduce the Acceleration factor (BL remains the same).
2. The Madisound PRs that I have seen have foam surrounds that degrade fast
3. give this the best way you can add mass is using blu tak. I have used this (to measure drivers) and have even run in drivers while mass loading the cone.
If you are satisfied with the blu tak sound you can use a more permenant method (it involves removing the dustcap) such as used by ALR-Jordan.

my 2 cents is get the Lambdas!
i recently rec'd two LE SBP12's and just one of those in a TL pushed with a mere 60 watt amp shakes everything in my 500 sf room! great authority and impact, but this is one-sided as i haven't compared it to the others mentioned. also, Nick is back-logged quite a bit on e-mails, so phone is the best way to reach him, or the Yahoo Lambda forum, also a good source for info.
good luck,
scott
