Where to buy ferrofluid ?

I've been modding drivers and this stuff is not
the same stuff used in speakers, I've been doing
experiments and this stuff dries out. Sanity
check, I opened up my EV compression driver that
I installed ferrofluid 10 years ago and it's still
liquid and redish in color. Where do I get this
stuff from?

We had this question some time ago on the german Visaton board, and Visatons chief constructor wrote, that it's about 1000 Euro per liter...

So you must have too much money to buy it...

I remember buying this fluid for $20 US years ago in a small bottle
enough to modify 100 drivers.

I don't know why it's not an 'off the shelf' product anymore

The other thing about the "educational" ferrofluid is that the fluid in this pack has a viscosity rating that is way too high for speaker use. Even just a little of it damps the driver way too much and linear distortion skyrockets.

As far as I can tell, there's no way to buy the stuff unless you're a driver manufacturer. As benny points out, the stuff is ridiculously expensive, and I don't think they are going to sell anyone a tiny $20 bottle's worth.

I used the Ferrotec EFH1 and vicosity is fine for my midrange mod.
I don't notice any audible difference when I applied it, the only
issue was it dries up. I'm working on plan B. using this stuff mix
with another liquid that doesnt' dry up

What is ferrofluid made from anyhow? It seems to me it would probably be some sort of oil that has iron dust dissolved into it.

I used it in a tweeter once. Just a little bit turned the impedence into a flat line. I suppose it might work ok in some instances, as long as it's used far above the Fs. Did you take any before and after impedence curves?

This is a complete guess, but I suspect it's somehow bonded at a molecular level, or otherwise it would seperate.

Impedance curves are not important in my case.

Ferrotec EFH1 is what I have, doesn't work.

Ferrotec makes the audio grade fluid if I can find a dealer - rofl

For now I'm doing 50/50 oil tests. Mixing oil with EFH1 and modding
4 midrange drivers and let the games begin. Only time will tell.
I'm testing 4 different oils..
