Well, i know this thread is boring but its better than the recent arguing, so anyway, Does anyone know of places to buy blackout cloth? Where around you do you think might have it, i might have the same stores near by. I guess blackout cloth is the prefered screen, so this is why i ask.

cool

thanks for the input, I called my local Joannes fabrics and they said they have some but its not compleatly blackout and not useable in darkrooms, i hope it will work. Its about 6$ a yard, i think my screen will be 6 foot diagonal, is this a good size? any recommendations on size? I will go in a second to take a look at the cloths.

YAHH

Yahh i bought some blackout cloth, it was called bargain blackout, I got a piece about 4 feet by 5 feet for 9.99$. Would this be a good size screen? or do you think its kinda small? I still need to find a way to get the wrinkles out and make a frame or something to put it on. I CANT WAIT!!

I went to Joann's and they didn't know what I was talking about. Oh well. I'm going to do a search for DAZIAN right now.

Got some questions about painting blackout cloth.

1. What is gesso? Is it different than Goo?

2. Is grey always better than white when using LCD projectors?

It should be in Joann's home decor area with the other "home decor" fabrics. My experience is if you ask the people in the clothing fabric area what blackout cloth is, you'll get nothing but dirty looks.

Not sure what Goo is exactly, but Gesso is just an acrylic based artists primer, which comes in many different brands and formulas. I used the Liquitex brand on my screen with good results.

I know the big tradeoff with a grey screen is blacker blacks at the expense of image brightness. Not totally sure if there are other significant pros/cons. One of these days I'm going to muster up the time and effort to use the grey Gesso on another screen and see how that works out.

Went to Joann Fabrics to get mine, too

Reminds me of my trip in there. I went in and asked a young lady if they had "black out cloth". She didn't know what it was so I explained that it was something they used to line draperies with to block out the light. She went to check with another employee and came back and said, "We have that, but it only comes in white, not black"! 😀 I told her that would have to do.....LOL!

haha

haha thats great, when i went in there with my nephew, he said "heres some black cloth". I had to laugh. I used gesso a few years ago in an art project for school. We used it to glue paper patterns to 3d clay figures, We also put a coat over the top of the paper as a glaze, if that helps you get a feel of what it is. Ours dried clear, im not sure if thats the same kind. How big is everyone making their screens?

Delusion. Thanks a million. I went back and they did have it in home dec. I was originally looking in the fabric section for clothes and quilts (I feel like queen shoping in that place, lol). I got it, and I bought some gesso at Michael's. When I asked for it, they just happened to show me the Liqidex, so I'm glad your happy w/ it cause that's what I got. I bought a large bottle of white, and a small bottle of black. I think I'm gonna do a white w/ an ever-so-slight hint of grey. I just construted a nice 4'x7.1' frame (16x9 aspect) and the glue should be dry tommorow. I can't wait to try it out.

And to fill you in, Screen Goo is a brand name paint meant for painting walls and fabrics to use for projection. It comes in "Matte White" and "Digital Grey". It's probably just gesso though.

I made my screen today. My screen is like a painter's canvas. Getting all the wrinkes out was a pain, but I managed to do it while only going through 4 sticks of staples.

I painted it just now, should be dry tommorow. It's not perfectly smooth so I'll do another coat tommorow. So far I'm very impressed with how smooth the cloth is. I think this is going to work really well, and I spent only $50 or so.

I projected on the black side of my blackout cloth rather than the white side, and surprisingly the image seems better to me because the black become black, whereas if I project on the white side, the black looks wash-out.

So you think is it better to project on a darker color side of the cloth ?

how does the whites looks on the black side?

damn

damn you payed 50$!? i only paid 15$ but im assuming yours looks better... I used PVC piping to make the frame, easy to do, kinda like playing with blocks. I then burned pilot holes in it with a hot nail and hammered thick utiliity staples into the pilot holes. Oh and i cut the staples so they were l shaped.
