Hello,
I was thinking of doing a build with two Dayton ES180TiA-8's woofers,
Dayton Audio ES180TiA-8
One RST28F-4 tweeter,
Dayton Audio RST28F-4 1-1/8" Reference Series Fabric Dome Tweeter 4 Ohm
And I am wondering what benefit would there be to adding a mid like the RS52FN-8?
Dayton Audio RS52FN-8 2" Reference Fabric Dome Midrange 8 Ohm
I shallower slopes?
Or a waste of a driver and extra crossover parts?
Thoughts?
Thank you,
David.

Typically the purpose of a midrange is to span the "gap" between a woofer that can only be used so high in frequency before some issues are encountered (related its response or distortion profile, etc.) and a tweeter than can only be used so low in frequency (typically its distortion or power limited in the lower part of its passband). The mid can play through this middle frequency band that neither driver can do well.
In general, when a 1" dome tweeter and a 6" driver or smaller is used, the two drivers have a frequency region around 1k-3k in which both can operate without any major problems, and so a 2-way will work fine. When the woofer is 8" or larger and/or the tweeter is less capable, this may not be the case and a midrange is useful.
There are some examples of small 3-way systems - the NHT Classic 3 for example. So it's certainly possible to have a midrange AND a smaller woofer, but it's case dependent. I believe that the Classic 3 uses a 3/4" tweeter and the small dome mid helps to bridge the gap. The crossover frequencies are 3.2kHz (18dB/octave) and 800Hz (12dB/octave).

Interesting you have the same ideas as me, I posted a number of simulations in this thread for a dual ES180 but using the smaller SB26CDC tweeter. In the thread are a couple of links to speakers using this woofer.
Project Idea - comments please
Mids I looked at were -
Satori MR13P - gets really good review but not sure about the 1.5khz wiggle, but this seems to be inaudible but looks nasty.
EM1308 2" dome - needs to be crossed at around 800hz so better with a 3/4" tweeter
W4-1337SD - used in the Speaker Design Works Statement series but in an open back situation
10F4424/8824 - this seemed to model the best with a cross over at around 500Hz
The ES180 seems to model well in 20L (40l dual) Bass Reflex, will keep an eye out on how you get on.

How about adding WG to RST? Acc to following thread it could fit Jantzen WG. What is diameter of dome on RST? => diametr of throat, jantzen has 44mm.
