Strange phenomena indeed. Happily only starting to appear here.
Fairly widespread in weaker venues though.
An attempt as misguided pecking order status marker?
Perhaps one could list the food they've eaten as a marker/ signature ...likely as relevant 🙂

Yes, sad to see this silly practice beginning to appear here. Presumably an attempt at bragging, or claims to 'golden ears' (or at least, a golden wallet). It does have one useful purpose: it alerts me to treat posts by that person with slightly more caution than anyone else I don't know.
I'm not sure if the above comments apply directly to what I do but here it is for me. While I don't actually list my gear, I do have a couple links. Here is my thinking:
The Margarita part gives you an idea of how I like to live. I would love to be Jimmy Buffett's friend.
The link to my 'stuff' gives you perspective as to where my opinions come from without having to state, or what might be construed as bragging, that I have enough gear to form what I think are 'earned' opinions.
The other link gives you an idea as to what I do for a living. I am a rather open person and welcome questions that others might have, in an area other than audio. It let's them know what I can help with.
That's it from my side of the sofa. 🙂

Including links in the signature line is fine - we have the option to read the information or ignore it.
Putting the list of equipment in the line means we can't ignore it. I assume we are meant to be impressed, but the impression made is rather similar to that made by a young man with a very large sound system in a very small car. We are impressed, but not quite in the way he intends!

What is a LOT worse is condescending responses having no technical merit. Their format is the "know it all", too superior to respond in helpful way.
It cuts many ways -
A guy with a signature list of recognized up-market products intended to impress can't also be serious about DIY or at least they can't see DIY products as worthy, alongside their collection of commercial products. Perhaps another forum where acquiring and auditioning these is the general topic would suit them better.
Someone with a list of popular DIY projects might expect acceptance here though, as being proud to point out one or two of the best of what they've built or rebuilt. Surely that's valid DIYAudio participation and an indication that they may have some worthwhile opinion/advice on those projects. Stating it with each and every post sure gets tedious, though. I personally think that such details should be in every member's profile page, which you link to by clicking on their username, if you're directed to in the signature or just curious.
I'd add that having signature statements permanently highlighted in some form takes them beyond signature status and into overt bragging and advertising territory - somewhat intimidating for newbs and those who aren't able to finance, build or simply don't need any more SS amplifiers.
Engineers and other industry types probably take an ethical position here, like most professionals who admire the science and scientists but shun associations with their commercial or popular manifestations. You get that pretty soon when you read their signatures which usually quote some astute philosophical quip - likely nothing to do with audio or even electronics.
Academics stand even further out - happy to represent their science alone. I think they see personalities and their practical achievements and promotions more as distractions to a deeper understanding of the topic, which is probably what they would rather respond to in forum posts.

I saw someone having a list of DIY amps only. That should be good to be inspired in the hobby.

Signatures help us to know each other, as our public profile and avatar.
It is absolutely personal, and belong to our own idiosyncrasy, and if it is not against forum rules, it is not questionable.
I believed that this forum is about thinking, this thread is not about thinking, but rather cheap gossips.
In other words, criticize a signature seems to me bizarre and surreal.
What next? Criticize public profiles? Avatars? Forum friends? Flags? Nicknames?

The practice of listing hardware in signatures started many years ago in computer forums..
This purpose was two fold....... to assist with trouble shooting a system and..... just as inmportant to the poster... bragging rights for those with a high end system.
I suspect that some here just want to brag about there audio system here because this forum is about the only outlet for them to do as no one else in their life appreciates good audio.

Thinking way back, I once lightly fantasized of putting a certain item in my signature in a different forum, to attach it to my identity, like "Ah, that person listens to xyz".
It didn't happen, but I remember thinking that way at least and I think this school of thought is very common.
It's pretty similar to walking around with xyz audio or clothing item on the street. Maybe back in the day it was a brand of some kind of sword or certain fabrics like silk. I think the Egyptians had hierarchy in their eye makeup system, some kind of desire for status?
The other reason I can think of is sharing. Like...... ---years of trial and error, here's the most beautiful sound I could find---
If the intention looks like flaunting wealth, just ask them to put their CAR in their signature as well.
