What's the next step up after my single Tempest?

I'm still trawling for ideas on the "next" sub or subs. I'm finishing my basement and so there will be a lot more room available for an enclosure than I have now, whereas my 165L sealed Tempest is the most space I could ever see devoting to a sub in the current living room.

So what's the next step up? I already started another thread on doubling up the Tempest and that's one option, but what about something totally new with deeper extension? And flashy too, like maybe an 18" driver.

Any favorites?

Hi,

More or less my first post so, be gentle! 😉

If you have a completly seperate room with no restrictions, why don't try and build multiple bassmodules and place them in different places (respectivly corners if you build 4 of them, e.g. one in each corner).

This is supposed to minimize the room effect of standing wawes.

By using more units, rather than few (e.g. one), you also will benefit sonically since your not using extreme excursions (where nonliniarity is a fact).

1st post since 2002? Wow, that's got to be some kind of record!

Multiple modules is cool, but 4? That's sounds like a huge difficulty in integrating properly.

Stereo subs are cool, I would think that they would be better for music whereas a single monster sub is a more foolproof way to get more boom boom for HT.

Well if you want just a bit more than the tempest you could get another one. but if you feel like having one hella loud low system maybe look at dual maelstroms? Ive also been hearing stuff about blueprint drivers, I know they get loud but I havn't heard much along the lines of SQ.

Well, I registered back in 2002 but have mostly (mainly!) been active on swedish forums. But that is about to change... 🙂

I do not understand your consern about "not integrating properly"!??

The SPL level should be no problem to adjust.

The thing about it beeing to slow or swampy is, in my view, mainly because with a single bassunits you excite (is that the english word?) the room gain vary hard and the echo of bass will never die. You will get new "problems" (so to speak) which didn't occur earlier.

If you're looking for the most sonicall bass at some frequencies ONE big bass (or several at the same place) is the way to go. But if you wanna have a smoother, yet strong and emphizised, bass, multiple bassboxes is the way to go (or at least one way to go).
