What's the best pair of speakers you've ever heard?

Yeah, we'll lucky.
Tweeters were blown and a couple of crossover parts also burnt out, but with a little dedication got them fixed up. I actually sourced the components that I needed from Falcon. Nice guy to deal with. Should go active with them really! I heard some Isobarik's with a full "six pack" of Naim amps along time ago on the end of a Linn LP12 and Koetsu cartridge and Ittock arm.......wow! Way, way, way beyond any budget that I ever had.
The best sound I ever heard out of anything was from a pair of Jecklin Float electrostatic headphones at a Hi Fi show in Bristol, again, many moons ago.

Ah. Jecklin Floats. Good shout.

They're not actually electrostats. They do make you look like a Mekon, but with a relatively simple, if forward-thinking design these orthodynamic cans (still) sound outrageously good. IIRC they only sold for c. £80 / $120, when last in production c.15yrs ago. And you can still find new full foam replacement sets for not much cash!

I have (and have had) Stax & still want to pick up a pair of Floats anyway.

Wharfedale Isodynamics . I had these when aged about 14 and cost about £20 then . Magnaplaner are a similar principle .

Akai AA 4040 receiver . ERA mK6 turntable . SHE V15 III loaded with 220pf silver mica . Dynaco A 25's ( was about 18 when A 25's arrived )

I have some Stax now . In my 56th year and never had a day when not hi fi fanatic from age of 4 .

Only as headphones and in FAL . FAL didn't mention he bought them from these people . Think that's right . Highly recommended . For what it's worth a Motorola tweeter with some careful crossover design can give a hint of this for pennies . A super tweeter at 10 kHz to 40 kHz .

I find the Ergo AMT not interesting in comparison to Audeze magnetostats. Price and quality is comparable, but comfort of the AMT (both shape and weight) is a mess. The AMP1 appeared very neural to me for a very competitive price.

Best I've ever heard by a long way at hifi shows were 4 stacked Quad ESL63's and that includes the bass. It had the lot, clarity in the extreme at all frequencies and just so musical. Can't remember the rest of the vinyl based system unfortunately, it looked a bit home-brew and I think they were demonstrating a cartridge.

A cheaper alternative to stacked Quads is to use pieces of MDF top and bottom to make the baffle larger . A small bass advantage is had . A stacking frame can be used to house it all . Well worth a try if getting stacked Quads later .

A recording studio I helped has stacked Quads , so proud of that .

I soon hope mine, wishful thinking 🙂

I've just finished with woodworking. Now I "only" need to design a descent filter, this could be the hardest part 🙄

Last year at a Hifi show I heard those open baffle Lyngdorfs
They sounded like you were in the concert hall, they were the best of the show.

Grts,
Danny
