It will tell you in the user manual all the formats playable. The Pearl is MP3, WMA, M4a and WAV.
Audacity (freeware) allows you to convert between some formats but far better to have the stuff in the correct formats to begin with if possible.

A lossless format is the best, flac and wav are lossless.
WMA and M4a can contain both: lossless and lossy.
mp3 is always lossy.
In a lossy format music information is thrown away, on a good audio system you can hear these artifacts, even with 320kb mp3s.
Lossless formats can be compared to zip files: by unzipping it you get the original contents back, this is impossible with lossy formats.
