How does one test that, i wonder.

When the U.S. Supreme Court used to have to decide what was porn and what wasn't the unofficial test was if the judges got a significant physical response!

I am so glad that is your contribution. The joke around here is that I am building a laser death ray. Of course I had done that as an undergraduate project for one of the guys who was working on what would latter be named by Pres. Reagan as the Star Wars programs.

Yes, every so often I get the usual secret stuff, gravity reduction, environmental manipulation, and data interception. You know nothing fancy.

George, I've wanted to play with a 7904 system for a while now. You're making me cry! There is just so much good stuff there! Had I been there, I would have bought two systems to make sure I'd get one running at least. There are some people who swear by these and nothing else.

And then there are all the tubes you picked up. Whimper :bawling:
At least they went to someone who will actually use them, there is that.

Ken, I used a card from Conexant I got off Ebay (one of the few things that worked). Drivers from NI ended up being the ones I used when selecting the interface in the Agilent software. If you cant get data, but can send commands, then make sure your 8903 is set so it can talk. The Agilent software needs to locate your instrument first (one of the setup steps), then you talk and listen to that address. It goes without saying that each instrument has it's own address, and that the card uses one too. It's like SCSI in computer land. I think Jack (jackinnj) and a few other members helped me quite a bit. I bought the Conexant card before I knew anything and thought I was sunk at first. But, it's working so yours just needs some effort and clear thought.

Try to make a list of each step in your instructions and tick off each once you know for sure that each has been completed. Everything from software loading to each and every configuration. The device drivers will be first, followed by a reboot. If your OS can't see the card, your apps won't either. It appears that you have some functionality, so it is probably only setting the 8903 to talk now.

My workbench area is so cramped I'd need a fisheye lens to photograph it. Which has forced me to be a bit less disorganized than some people I won't mention. Now working on issues with my 40 year old Heathkit IO-105 oscilloscope, without further breaking it...

I got it to work. Pete Millet was kind enough to share his code with me. I also found some example files for the HP3562A and have that working as well. I now have the 8903A setting up the input frequency and amplitude, the spectrum analyzer starting up without the fundamental in the spectrum which gives a significant decrease in the noise floor. Woo hoo, fun stuff!

Such sad news about Jim Williams and then Bob Pease. Whew...

I hope no body finds this in bad taste, but it's interesting that Jim's bench looks a bit like his hair. Reading some of his aplication notes it's clear that he had a sense of humor, hope that he would appreciate the remark.

I recognise HP voltmeters, and is that a Tek7603 far left?

Scope on the left is a 5223 -- this one came from a health care devices manufacturer in Minnesota.

There are a couple of 3456A's, a couple of HP power supplies, a TM5006 with a PS5010 and some DVM's. One of them I use to monitor the ambient temp.

The Hako solder station is on my right, sitting on a Heath HV power supply. I recently purchased a magnifying light which compensates for looming far-sightedness. Theres an SRI FFT up there -- equal to the HP 35670 but easier to program.

Biggest asset is a beat up Dell laptop which tunes in to WCLV and WTAM in Cleveland, or WQXR and WNYC in NYC.

I recall being told that when Henry Ford moved Thomas Edison's lab (to become part of the "Greenfield Village" museum), he even excavated and relocated the trash dump so that even Edison's failed and discarded ideas could be available for historical analysis. It seems to me that some attempt to preserve the clutter and messiness - even if it's just a video record of its disassembly/dissection/dispersal - could be both a fitting tribute to the man's memory and potentially continue some of his efforts.

If you ever come to NJ you can see the remains of Edison's lab -- West Orange NJ -- about 4 miles from my QTH. We'd take the Scouts there all the time. It's a much cleaned up national historical site, having been shuttered for about 8 years. I think there were a lot of nasty chemistry set stuff there!

You can see the little cubbies where Tom Edison would take naps during the day.

Mine used to short the high voltage filter capacitor until I put in an overrated one. The the power transformer developed a short from the CRT filament supply. After one transformerectomy the second time I used a flat pack transformer as a 1/1 isolation transformer. Use a 6 or 12 volt unit one secondary winding in the other out and leave the primaries open. I put it in a small plastic box on the back of the unit. After that the only issue was it's DC drift.
