I would like to change the DAC chip in my NAD C541i from the Burr-Brown PCM1732 to the 1792. How hard is this to do? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Quite hard, certainly not as simple as desoldering one chip and then soldering a new one in. The PCM1732 and PCM1792 are not pin compatible, and the '92 uses balanced current outputs, whereas the '32 provides single ended voltage outputs, meaning the analog stages for each are completely different.
If you really want to put a new DAC into your C541i, have a look at the kits available at places like Twisted Pear Audio, DIY Hifi etc. The fist step would be to find out what type of internal digital bus your player is using.
