There's a shop that's selling a used Marantz CD-67SE for $390CDN (that's $305USD). That seems a little steep to me since I saw some on ebay for chepaer if i remember right, but i have NO idea as to what its worth. Any input?
(Also there's the added bonus of paying nothing for shipping & customs, but the not-so added bonus of paying extra 7% tax ..) Also, keep in mind, this $390CDN could quite probably be worked down to $350 at best, but its better than nothing 🙂

CD67 MkII price.
I bought mine a couple of years ago for about US$220/- NEW ! from Hong Kong . HK is not necessarily the cheapest place you can find. Just look at Tube prices amongst other things!
Cheers.

Elizard,
Even though the CD63/CD67 is a good DIY upgrade platform, the price seems too steep.
I would look for a used Rotel 9XX series piece, I know there has been a few RCD935 pieces on E-Bay for around $100.00 USD.
Good luck.

Thank you 🙂
Is rotel good for upgrades? (fairly easy for upgrades that is) And how is the sound of it before upgrades?
Elizard,
I have modified a couple Rotel CD players for some people and found it a very good platform. There is a lot more room inside than Marantz or NAD machines.
The stock sound is good and received reviewer praise when the CD players first hit the market. Maybe check www.audioreview.com .
Cheers

I would not spend more than 10% of above figure.
It's hard for people to accept, but prices have just collapsed because of the newest generation DVD players.
I would spend my money on a cheap but decent DVD like the Panasonic S35 and mod that. Standard is sounds already better than any of these Marantz, plus it plays DVDs, MP3, JPEG, WMA, DVD-A, etc.
🙂
Elizard,
I disagree with rbroer. Cheap DVD players are exactly that, cheap DVD players. Their picture quality is marginal and their audio performance is poor.
Their whole design is IC/surface mount components and would be a poor platform for upgrades. Who wants to deal with surface mount soldering?
Keep your eyes open on E-bay for a Marantz, NAD or Rotel piece.
Cheers

I have a cheap dvd player now, and it is CHEAP (I think it cost me $50-$60 at wal-mart, and will be returned very soon!)
The problem with it is that the video quality is nothing to be excited about, as well as the sound quality. It makes horrid pops on even the slightest scratches, and doesn't want to play some cds at all. Also when playing cds the sound that the unit produces ranges from loud to very VERY loud (whirring noise, not so bad when playing dvds however).
I think i'll take kevin's advice, and when i get some more money watch for decent deals on ebay.
Re: Re: What's a marantz cd-67se worth?
I don't think that you'll find a dvd player here that's worth $39, not to speak of decent cd players. Even used its a bit hard to get something for that price (and to get something that's worth anything ..)

C'mon guys, please read...
I was talking about cheap but decent, (Eur 129 for the Panasonic S35-EG), 🙂
Dorkus has posted about it as well...It does leave the once decent cd players in the dust.
I reckon it will be a major upgrade for non-audio"freaks"
I wasn't talking about cheap and garbage (Hiteker, KISS, to name a few no-names)...

You have to spend some money...😀

So how good is the Panasonic then? Ive been considering my next step and cant make up my mind what to try - one is something like this - the philips dvd-728/729 looks good too. Also ive considered using a dvd player that has a spare ide connector inside (usually from a sd card reader) to allow a HD to be fitted which could store files in various mediums for playback as well as upgrading the player's electronics. If this where to work i think it could be pretty cool.
EDIT - assuming you have one (or someone else) when you pop the hood could you let me know if it has an IDE style (for HDs in PCs) connector to the DVD loader/drive ? Cheers

I recently bought one, based on Dorkus postings and a test review in a Dutch magazine (had best sound).
I promised my other half it will stay closed till guaranty expires
, unlike my previous Samsung 709 that was modded the day I bought it (and modded to dead 😡 )
Just recently I had a Linn Ikemi cd player on loan from a friend;
he paid 5000 guilders for it (US$2500).
I was not impressed...
I do like the Sony DVD9000ES with VSE level 4 upgrade (Vacuumstate, Allan Wright); with level 2 it was quite a step down. US$1800 value or so.
I'm really impressed by this Pansonic S35, probably in the USA it costs 50% of what we pay in Europe.
Got no intentions to let it be my main player, but stock it does leave the golden oldies cd players in the dust.
I expect there are a few more "cheap" but decent devices out there.
