What would cause no sound and a square wave output?

Hi all,
I am trying to get a test circuit up and running based on this chip.

https://www.diodes.com/assets/Datasheets/PAM8019.pdf

But i am not having much luck at the moment

Here is the input signal to the amp.

An here is the output signal to the speaker which i get no sound from and a very suspect square wave.

Any ideas what might be going wrong here to give such an output?

Notes:

I have left the PL pin unconnected
I have not implemented any under voltage protection as i assume this is optional.
I have connected pin 8 directly to VDD 5V rail

Ok so a bit of progress.... i added a voltage divider with two 10k resistors onto pin 8 so that its effectively at half volume (2,5V) according to the datasheet.and i can now hear something at least, but it is clipping like crazy.
Just noticed im running 8ohm speakers here instead of the 4ohm in their data sheet but am doubting this is the issue..

Looks like you have the tools for audio work but that class D chip might be extra challenging. Have you done any projects that are analog only. I find these plastic breadboards are unreliable because they do not have proper sockets for the jumper wire pins. Good luck.

Yeah, ive had to hot glue the things in to make them stay put lol... you work with what youve got 🙂

Biggest pain of the day was soldering that chip to the breakout board an not knowing if it wasnt working because i wired it up wrong or beacuse i failed with the hot air station to reflow it correctly.
