what would be wrong with using this as a light source? Its basicly the same setup as those $200 lighting kits? Also I can get the the 400w MH Bulb included for $10 more...

Those grow kits are designed for aquariums and plants, so many of the bulbs use a color temperature that isn't suitable for our purpose. Read the "Things Newbies Should Know" forum. There's a lot on this forum concerning those ebay grow kits and why they wont work.

yeah, I read that before posting, but all it said thats its not good and didn't discuss it any further as to why it won't work. I'll look it over again though. maybe I overlooked it I suppose.
What beats me is if it doesn't work for this then why did the same specs work for this http://www.hommie.net/construction.htm
The guy used the same M59 Multitap ballast for his project.
it works, as long as you use lamps with 4000K. Actually, it was THE light setup last year this time. But people moved to smaller bulbs like HQI, HWI, or CDM. reasons? smaller box, higher effeciency.
Yeah, I have one of those grow lights..it's bright, I suppose..but it has to be very far away from my fresnel to even use it.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Actually, I beleive he used a big old 400w MH setup. The bulb is contained in the box on top. Light is mirrored to hit the LCD. You'd have to look at his page, I think he used glass or something to reduce heat. Very nice little setup.
