I am currently thinking about this mini JBL M2:

The height of the whole device is 1.04 meters, and with a bicolor baffle, it might be possible to hide its size even more. The waveguide is 32 cm wide, the speaker 36 cm.
1 kHz crossover on the compression driver and a ath freestanding waveguide with a wide radiation pattern waveguide. This one is my current attempt and between 68 degree at 1000 to 60 at 8000 Hertz.

This is how it could perform metrics-wise:

I’m considering copying Joseph Crowe’s 76L sealed design for the SB Bianco-15OB350 to go under the ATH-460 horn.
It feels like as a “budget” system it would punch well above its price bracket and be a fairly compact system.
Would you mount the horn such that the bottom lip is directly in line with the top of the 15” driver?
About the sealed design:

Separately I also have 2x SB 18SW450 that could go into 100L sealed designs. Is 18” too large to go with the 460 horn? The 18” starts going directional at about 600hz. I was intending on using them as separate subwoofers for the overall system, but I’m open minded. I don’t own the 15OB’s yet.
I’d love to hear what two way designs people are considering for this driver?

Relevant trade-offs in two way system that allows for a low crossover frequency:Would you mount the horn such that the bottom lip is directly in line with the top of the 15” driver?
- No, dont place the horn directly above the woofer: you want a wide spacing of up to 1.3 lambda at xo freq (as per Kimmo Saunisto) to mitigate the dip in power response. Basically, the vertical radiation pattern becomes increasingly asymmetrical and the downward lobe is filling in the missing power via first reflections.
- Yes, distance could be an issue where an instrument plays notes across the crossover spectrum, like a bass guitar. Two separate sources might be discernible.
For a rather directional, thus deep and 'loading' waveguide like the current designs from mabat, the dfm-2535 can be crossed around 900 Hz, the limiting factor being distortion. Maybe a bit lower, if you are okay with exceeding the 1 percent (-43 dB) distortion threshold. But as distortion is then rising significantly it is a sign that the limits of the driver might be reached. Is 18” too large to go with the 460 horn? The 18” starts going directional at about 600hz.
How wide/narrow in deg is the radiation pattern of the 18-inch woofer at 900 Hz? To solve this, use VCad diffraction tool and enter SD of your driver, create frg. Manuals are everywhere. If you can handle Ath, it's possible to model both horn and driver and answer all your questions. More work though.
I got my newly arrived pair plumbed into my homebrew SH50s.
Sorted the freq resp and phase (the latter still only roughly at the moment), and they are sounding mighty fine.
They knit in with / reach down to the 4xMF drivers nicely.
Plenty of detail and dynamics.
They are perfectly adequate SPL wise for home hifi use / for me!
Straight away they are much more preferable to the BMS4550 drivers I also have / will use for PA use on occasions.
The jury is still out on the DFM-2535s replacing my Vitavox S2s, but selling the latter would free up some cash🙂

Here are some measurement of the overall SPL and phase.
LF are 2xEminence Kappa 12A
MF are 4xCelestion 5" sealed back
HF is Peerless Tymphany 2525s
Sound damn good now!
RH
LH
These are taken at 1m from the homebrew SH50s.
I did of course take some of just the Peerless HF driver but I can't find them now.. next time
Below 55Hz I have 2 X 15" driver tapped horns.
