What was the FIRST album you listened to?

We had very few records to play on my dad's new hi-fi. We listened to them with relish in part because they all told stories. They were soundtracks to the shows my parents had attended: Camelot, Oliver... I still love that music and those recordings.
But the one that sticks out was not from a show but a Christmas album that also told a story on one side: Season's Greetings with Perry Como.

Probably The Jungle Book soundtrack record from the 60s. There was a Grundig console stereo in the house and my parents were members of the Columbia House Record Club. There was also a recording of Swan Lake and then a bunch of Dean Martin, Percy Faith etc. but the Jungle Book is the one I remember most. Further back then that in about 65 my uncle lived with us for a while and he had a portable record player and a bunch of 45’s.

by no means my first - but a couple of early ones after assembling my first big stereo amp (EICO ST40) - Audio Fidelity "Marches From Operas" - still remember the sound of the Utah 12" Celesta pole-piece mounted paper cone tweeter.

When I was a child in the single digits I was a real Spike Jones fan. So much so that I even wrote to him (somehow) and requested a picture of himself with his band. I also complemented his wife Helen Grayco and received her picture too. Both of these are long gone. So my first albums were of Spike. Probably Carmen, but could be The Charleston. These are extended play 45 albums. Those originals are also long gone, but I do have copies bought on eBay years ago. And I still have a large Spike Jones collection including 33s, 45s, and 78s and some CDs and DVDs.

First owned was Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
I was with my Dad when he purchased our first quality component stereo in '68, a Panasonic receiver, Dual TT and Electrohome 10" speakers. The shop owner let me pick out a "free" album to go with it. Later, Dad wouldn't let me play "that noise" when he was home. I still enjoy it.

A quick look through my record collection shows that my collecting started in 1967. I know I had some earlier records but can't find them now. There were three incidents where some of my records were stolen. I had most of the early Beatles albums, but can only find A Hard Days Night, Rubber Soul and Abbey Road right now. Can't find Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn or Umaguma either. My collection is kinda large and out of order, so they all could be in there somewhere.

I can't remember exactly, but it was either Elvis, Johnny Cash, or Burl Ives. My grandfather loved Burl Ives, and mom was in love with Elvis and Johnny. I loved watching Elvis movies with mom, and listening to his albums with her. Grandma subjected us all to church hymns, and sang and played them on the piano. She was an amazing talent, with near perfect pitch, and a raving zealot. She always supported anything music with my sister and me, and let me keep a Sousaphone, and my drumkit set up in the living room. I would spend hours on end playing along to Rush, Zep, Black Sabbath, etc., and while she hated my music, she loved that I was so obsessed with it all. I had a collection of KISS albums, and when the backwards masking lunacy came along, she and my sister broke them all, and burned them in grandpas burn barrel. Knights In Satans Service and all.🤪Glenn.

Must‘ve been some fairy tales, or
Beethoven 5th or Dvorak 9th. (Such were the times, I later developed my tastes through status quo (etc.) down to aphex twin, thelonious/meredith Monk, Don Cherry etc… but this was a long, unfinished journey!

Good to hear that I'm not the only one who feels that way. Yes. Track #2 on Side A is indeed Dancing Queen. I hate it. Knowing Me, Knowing You (last track on Side A) and quite a few of the tracks on the B side are pretty good though.

I like most of ABBA’s stuff. It’s up beat music with well formed complete sentences for lyrics and for me it’s a bit nostalgic. I think I was 14 when that album was released.
