I think the 5879 is similar to the EF86.
From what I read about the 5879, I don't think it needs upgrading.
RCA / 5879--BELL & HOWELL RCA
One of the most famous American Valve manufactures of all time. RCA was responsible for designing and manufacturing many important valves such is the 6V6GT, 6L6GC, 7027a and the super EL84 known as 7189. RCA also pioneered many advances in manufacture such as the black plate coating and had a hand in helping GEC make the famous KT66.
These 5879 were a specially selected by Bell & Howell for use in the Film industry. They are made by RCA in the USA.
These all come in the original B & H boxes.
This item was mainly used in vintage Gibson guitar amps and vintage audio circuits.
RCA 5879 were the original valves used and now becoming very scarce. We have a small stock of these valves .item.

EF86 is similar but not the same... There is no direct sub for the 5879, so why not just order NOS ones?

As the LTP in a 2-stage power amp like E-Linear or Baby Huey, would 5879 have an advantage over 6AU6A?

I am not following your train of thought: the LTP is a dual triode.
Long-tailed pair of pentodes is possible. Also long-tailed pair of cascoded triodes (see Allen Wright's various power amp designs).
Also, look at E-Linear amp by Bandersnatch (old thread here). That uses 6AU6 in LTP, driving Schaded EL34's.

Why do you keep asking? Buy a bunch and find out for yourself if you are so into tube rolling...
Are there poor quality copies of the 5879 out there? I've searched a few valve seller sites and they are only listing the RCA variant.
