What tube config will get this sound?

Journey's actually a very good band, Kevin. I never liked Perry much either, though.

Whut Kevin sez, bro. Given the vintage of that album, I would pretty much guarantee you that the only tubes in the song are in the guitar amp. I never saw any stomp boxes with tubes, but Barbour (MetaSonix) makes them, I think. Look through their videos of that time (as long as you can tolerate Perry's simpering) and see if you can pick up the brand of the picker's amp.

Back on topic; since he's using all Marshall boxes, It should be possible to pick a tubeset, since I understand that each of the brands - Fender, Vox, Marshall, etc. have preferred tubes, and tend to use the same ones across the board. Maybe there's a picker here who knows which and what.

Brand and type are important, unfortunately the tube brands Marshall was likely using in those days are no longer manufactured. Today your choice is mostly New Sensor produced brands (built in their Expo Pul plant in Saratov), JJ or Chinese. Marshall had a marked preference for the EL34 and these seem to show up in a lot of their non U.S. market designs. (Some of the later models sold here used 6L6GC) I suspect Mullard EL34 could have been standard issue in these amplifiers, and I have no idea whether the current "Mullard" clone (New Sensor) is anything close to the original in tone. (It's a good tube otherwise)
