What to pair these tweeters with? DIY Project

Hi Guys, I have not been designing or building speakers for some 5 years, but with the quarantine in Puerto Rico I have plenty of time in my hands, so I have fixed some speakers that I had laying around, I started building outriggers for a pair of TABAQ which sound great, but due to my lack of woodworking skills then, one of them is a little tilted to the side, which will be leveled by using outriggers. In the process of building a Class D 7 channel amp for HT duties, and want to build a Push Pull EL-84 amp (if someone can direct me to a simple, but good, EL-84 plans so I can build it I will appreciate it).

Anyhow, not gonna keep boring all of you with all the work I have done around the house and in my vehicles, plus all the cooking; going into the 7th week of quarantine.

Some time ago my cousin had given me a pair of tweeters to do a DIY project with. I had put off designing a speaker to use them in, it's time to do something with them.

Can someone suggest a woofer or mid-woofer to go with a Hiquphon OW-1, or a speaker design that I can use it in? I understand it is a very good tweeter.

My woodworking skills have gotten much better over the years and I have a 1/2" MDF panel in my garage begging to be used. Thanks in advance for your help.

You could do a Revelator 18W/4531 (or 8531) mid-woofer. Ignore the FR specs, the driver is very easy to integrate, has plenty of bass in the right size cabinet.

If that's too expensive, or you don't want to bring the tweeter quite so far down look at FaitalPro offerings.

Thanks for your suggestion, in all honesty it is not within my budget, though I'm sure it is hell of a woofer. I like FaitalPro, been very well impressed by their products and their pricing. Actually one of the speakers I have been thinking of building is an Econowave with FaitalPro components.

Also, even if I go with the Revelator, I am afraid that my design skills are not up to par as to get the best out of such a woofer.

For a EL 34 and a step-by-step guide by video you might want to look at Marks channel BlueGlow Electronics on YouTube

I believe you can Also contact him on audio karma I believe one of the audio post. The above YouTube link is part one of a EL 34 build

Thanks! But, looking for EL-84, as I have 4 ea. TAD EL84-STR that I really, really, really enjoy their sound; I also have a 4 ea. Electro-Harmonix KT90EH, but though very nice, I am not as enthusiastic about their sound like the TAD's.

I wouldn't want to use the OW1 much below 3kHz so, for me, that would rule out 6-7" drivers and make my target a smaller 4-5" based system.

These look perfect as a completed system but it uses Scan revelator drivers...Might be worth the extra outlay just for it being a completed design though.

HiquiSpeak 2 Way Monitor

Personally I'd go with something from the SB15 line. I'd pick the SB15CAC and cross as low as the tweeter would comfortably go, probably 2.8kHz, with a 4th order LW acoustic slope. You could potentially push 2.5k with a 4th order LW acoustic if the speaker wasn't going to be played loud.

Nice ideas all. And, yes, from what I have read, as I have never heard one, the OW-1 deserves the company of higher end woofers.

5th element might be right about the size of the driver. My first pair of good speaker was a pair of PSB B-15 (5-1/4"), and a pair of B-25 (6-1/2"). The B-15's were for surround on an HT system with matching T-45 towers and C-45 CC, and the B-25's for an all music 2-channel system. I played around by changing the B-25 and B-15 from one system to the other, and the B-15 sounded so much better than the B-25 in the music only system, that they stayed there, and the B-25's were kept for surround on the HT; until sold. I miss those B-15's, when paired with tube amps or warm to neutral sounding amplification like NAD, Denon, or Marantz they were an excellent sounding budget speaker. Those 5-1/4" produced a well placed soundstage and were so much more controlled, detailed, and nicer sounding overall than their 6-1/2" sibling.
