Picked up a cheap old Realistic 12" passive sub a couple months ago, and while I've been fairly underwhelmed by its performance, I hate to just chuck the thing. So I'm thinking maybe I can ditch the stock driver and crossover and just reuse the cabinet...
Internal dimensions are 10"(W)x17"(L)x9.5"(H). The box is ported and down-firing, but I could probably seal it up and flip it on its side if need be. Any suggestions for a driver? I checked partsexpress.com's speaker selection wizard, and it gave me two possibilities (Pioneer A30IR50-51F and Pyramid PW1258-US) for use with a sealed box of that volume, and none for use with a ported box.
Anyone have any suggestions or advice on this?

Well, I had that same sub for along time. Come to find out, Pioneer made the driver for it. So it would probably not do you any good to use the pioneer since it wont boost performance. I would Possibly recommend www.apexjr.com and getting the Cerwin Vega amp for $60 and give yourself a powered amp for a computer system......

A) Plan on running this from a sub amp/crossover from Parts Express or Madisound or from the regular amp/receiver? There are dual voice coil choices that will allow you to use regular amp setup.
B) Most subwoofer amp/crossovers are 4 ohm output, which is fine. If you plan to use this in dual voce coil mode, what is the ohms of your regular amp- 8 ohms, 6 ohms, or 4 ohms?
Note: Pioneer makes a lot of 6 ohm drivers. You might want to take a meter and measure the DC resistance of the driver you are abandoning.
