An old radio shop in my city has just offered me valves from their old stock. Cleaning out. While most of them are usual El84 and the ECCxx series, the following are new to me:
E88CC (golden legs- very unusual) BEL make. Some Mullard.
UM84. BEL make
PY88. (Looked like a ractifier tube) BEL make
PCL805. (resembles EL84) BEL make. Some Chelmer (spelling??)
6158. BEL. Some Chelmer & Mullard
Alltogether around 30 in number. Are they worthwhile to have? The present store owner has'nt got a clue in this regards.
BTW BEL is an Indian company which made valves till mid 70's.
Thanks and cheer.

Although I am not a tube man, I remember that the E88CC was a hi-quality version of the ECC88, so may be worthwhile to save.
The Pxx tubes of course have serial (current) heaters so may not be easy to use in a DIY tube amp.

Hi,
Bar PY88 they're all worth having.
The 6158 I don't know anything about.
If the asking price is reasonable gor for it.
Cheers,😉

thanks janneman and fdegrove for the responces.
Asking price is not much. Less than a $US each.
Will the E88CC form the basis of a good RIAA phonostage? Could you helpful folks suggest some plans?
What use for the other tubes? The PCL805 looks quite tempting.
Thanks again

If you can get transformers wound cheaply, the PY88 (30 volt heater) would make excellent rectifiers with slow start.
Spec:http://www.hupse.nl/radio/tubes/PY88.htm
They have super heater-to-cathode insulation - actually a ceramic sleeve, so you should be able to run them from a series heater chain....Do you see where I'm coming from?
I don't know how linear the PCL805 is.
I wouldn't pay much for either type though. Good for an experimenter, not pracical for generic designs.

Download the tube database from duncanamps.com - it will tell you everything you need to know, plus has links to schematics using those tubes.
I would say grab the lot - esp things like EL84s, ECC88 etc.

Hi,
Buy them,you won't regret it.🙂
At 1USD a piece for ECC's, EL84s and a few E88CCs that go for 30 to 40 $ how can you loose?
John,
Says the man willing to spend a kilo bucks for a single WE 308B.😀
The PCL805 can be put to service as a regulator at the very least.
Cheers,😉

I meant the PCL805 and PY88!I wouldn't pay much for either type though.
Also, remember that the Indian economy is quite different from Europe. $1 goes a hell of a lot further.😉
A BUCK IS A BUCK.
Hi,
He'll probably have to buy the lot, I think.
Given a choice I'd drop those too and I still haven't got a clue as to these 6158s.
Cheers,😉

E88CC / 6DJ8 RIAA
hi
I am seriously looking at the following schematics for an RIAA phono stage using the E88CC valve.
Steve's Tube Pages
Transformer coupled preamp (will utilise just the Phono stage)
A simple phono preamp using a pair of 6DJ8/ECC88 tubes
I request your opinion on these cicuits.
I have bought the entire loot from that shop. 10 E88CC, 6 ECC83, 12 EL84, 4 6V6, 3 EL34 and off-cource all the tubes mentioned in my first post top of this thread. Also some sockets and connectors. Valves are a mix of BEL, Mullard and Philips.

Wot , you lot don't know the 6158 ?
...it's an ECC32 on a noval base . Very linear , low high order distortion , on the bench that is , have not used one yet . Made by Brimar , usual stuff , black anodes , same pinout as 12AU7 etc etc and the twenty or so I have test with excellent matching . Other designator is 13D3 . I think that either Audio Innovations or Audio Note (or both) used these in a phono stage .

Hi,
Ah...that one I do know.(CV4068)
Jean Hiraga reported on its' good sonic qualities back in the late seventies.
Later on I tested some of these (Brimar impressed me with the plastic noval pin protectors in their boxes) and it sounded a lot better than the standard ECC82.
It couldn't beat a 12BH7A or 12FQ7A though.
IMO this a very rare animal and I doubt many are still around.
For someone as Corbato having some stock I can only say either make a preamp with it (line level only) or whenever you see an amp with an ECC82/12AU7A try the 13D3/6158 and see if it improves sonics. It should.
Ciao,😉

Sine that good fortune befell me in the form of all those NOS tubes, I have been seriously looking at some RIAA phono stages to roll and finalized two. I post both the circuits.
and
i have certain mods in mind, however, i would greatly appreciate if veterans here could suggest which of the above will be the better project. rest of the parts are available.
thanking you in anticipation

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

PHONO PREAMP
Hi,
Works now.
First of all a question.
Are you going to use a MM or MC cartridge?
Second, both circuits have the gainscaling wrong, nothing that can't be overcome though.
The Pozzoli needs a third stage to bring the gain up to normal line level as well.
Tweaks you had in mind?
Cheers,😉

thanks fdegrove,
I use MM cartridge.
The 'tweak' i had in mind was playing around with RIAA componets. The result may not necceserly would have been 'purist' but could have sounded better.
As for your comments on gain issues, i did suspect that. can you suggest what mods and finally which cicuit could be best.
thanks again from a foggy india

RIAA
Hi,
I wouldn't toy with RIAA correction components unless I had the perfect inverse circuit.
This is an ill defined standard at best..the problem we're facing here is that if we change anything on the first stage the entire RIAA correction will be off as well.
Provided you can get Black Gate caps fotr the cathode bypasses I'd go for the first circuit.
If you don't use a CDP or don't need a line stage preamp in any way I can make suggestions on the last stage.
Cheers...monsoon in India?😉

Hi fdegrove..
Thanks for the views.
No intention here to use black gate or for that matter any fancy components. Only vanilla grade stuff, simply 'cause that's all available in the place where i live.
Any major issues if those black gates are not used? I will follows your advice if the first schema is good.
The output will feed a rod elliot death of zen pre-amp. looking forward to your advice.
monsoon...nahh...that far off..june..july..but currently its the winter fog...putting everything heywire..trains..flights etc..terribly cold as well..
