This has not been my experience with Class A amplifiers. I think you will find that the little group of Sydney members that you know of, would not agree with that either.
I have 3 suggestions that you could try, if you haven't already.
1.Use wide bandwidth devices in all stages. i.e. 100MHZ minimum in all but the output devices, where I find the Toshiba 30MHZ output devices work well. The new NJW0281 etc. from ON, would appear to be an excellent choice too.
2.Assuming you are using good bandwidth devices, Increase the input filter's rolloff point to as high as practical, and aim for an overall -3dB point >150KHZ.
3.Ensure that your power supply impedance is as low as possible, and as flat as possible. 30,000uF per supply rail , made up of 3 x 10,000uF parallel capacitors may be a good starting point.
These are only suggestions, and I realise that many members will vehemently disagree. I suggest that you take all offered suggestions from various members, and decide for yourself, which suggestions you feel are appropiate for your amplifier design. I will not be responding to any dismissive posts regarding these suggestions. They are offered solely for Carlos's consideration.

Some those things are because to aprove Pass seems you could perceive his gênius... you make connections....you are good in audio as you have perceived good enginneer Pass amplifier's qualities.....well... sometimes this is more social, more group sociological thing that real thing.
Only comparing you can say things... and one is different than the other..one is better than the other and it is very difficult to find the perfect one...or...no one is perfect finally... at the end.
A to B comparison depends on many things...people cannot know what they are listening (blind testing).... people cannot see the amplifiers under comparison...people cannot be your friend evaluating your stuff (he will never say the truth)... music must be playing into the same level, same power.... have to change music style not to produce errors in evaluationg because of musical tastes.... the testing operator, switch the same speaker (you can replace it by others many times)...but each comparison evaluation with one speaker.... a single speaker and switch substituting amplifiers with same peak power and same average power (if possible)..source direct to amplifier... 47k impedance.... the standard.. the universal..the rule!
Have to use many folks.... dark room... have to repeat testing...you switch the speaker and say... this is A.... and this is B.... do you know the one is better?
Then replace music and repeat this with several songs and styles.... them replace speaker and repeat the test.
Let people rest...no more than 5 minutes each test.
Do that with several folks...if you are famous.... please!... disappear from the test...you will influence with your presence.
Doing that you gonna know...and this is not "i think"...this is not feeling...but result!...real result!... human result without brands, styles, panel look, power and fashion .... real sound challenge.
So.. do not worry ... i do my things comparing..if you do not compare..you will never know if loosing something your not...you can dream the way you want and will be happy..for sure will be...all amplifiers sounds good..... but if you compare them.......well...things changes a lot.

Hi, I have always found when raising idle on an AB amp, which were supposed to be able to run in class A, sound always starts to get muffled, but as I recall mostly in midrange, what many people would call warmth, I am not too keen on it either, added couloration is not needed in my setup

For sure there are errors to influence sonics.
Boards, since obbeying some easy rules, sound the same... if you have someboard different...for sure there are errors.
For instance... some ideas about board construction.
Input must be very distant from output.
Parts cannot be parallel... better when they are not.. turns board uglier but do not induce one component to the other.
Lines cannot go paralel too much distant...not long paralel lines as they will represent capacitors..each line will be a capacitor plate.
Lines cannot be too much close, to much near... cannot have small distance one related the other one that is running in parallel.
Prefer to make circles than to produce 90 degrées angles with your copper lines.
The power lines...the rail lines must be thick and must have solder to increase it's capacity to hold current with reduced resistance.
Output inductor creates enormous magnetic field that may induce into circuits killing sonics..have to put output coil distant from the board....better if under the board, not in parallel with sensitive parts..not near the input.
Transistor and resistances must be assembled very close the board...i use sometimes distant legs to avoid to cut resistance leads..but i know if the amplifier, assembled that way, result sounding bad....then i have to change and cut the excess of length (Roender amplifier sounded fine even using long leads).
Well this is just the starting of rules...will not tell you all them as i have not patience to that...but for sure...if some board sounded bad..... was not the board... was the builder the guilty...made big mistakes into the board construction.... broke basic rules of thumb.

I find that statement insulting.
You are forgetting that our little group also used the big Class AB 100W/Ch. SC ULD ,of vhfman for comparison, and they sounded remarkably similar, except for the better soundstage of the Class A. I have also constructed a Class AB 100W/Ch. amplifier previously, using similar front end techniques , AND I have also heard a well constructed DX ....
I do however agree that too much bias with a Class AB , in an attempt to stay longer in Class A, may result in an apparent dulling of the sound.

I have also constructed a Class AB 100W/Ch. amplifier previously, using similar front end techniques , AND I have also heard a well constructed DX ....

I am just talking about human psychology.... relationship between people, defensive mechanism...dinamics of group of people... i can talk about that as i have a College degree about... despite have not worked for too long i have some basic understanding.... and this basic understanding is not complicated and everyone can understand and believe this happens outside ourselves.
I have used you as example..but this is generic..can happens with everyone..if cannot happens with you, i accept and believe as you said do not happens inside your group...but... for sure will happens in another group.

Carlos, here is another consideration, a scientific one.
As we grow older our hearing changes, especially with regards to high frequency. As the years go by youll find yourself hearing less and less high frequencies. This can easily be attested to by a doctor and a hearing test. There is a steady degration especially after 35yo age, more if you were junky disco or rock concert type. I could go into more detail and explain the finer details or rather my girlfriend could, she is physician but would be offtopic here.
I have compaired three tests i did over the years, when I compare the results from my teens to the last one it is shocking, I was one of those junkies, needless to mention my obsession with seinheiser headphones since teenage years. Strangely this affects mostly the higher frequencies. Since a couple of years there are electromagnetic treatments that can be done that help and can be proven with hearing tests. This doesnt seem to be your case though as your daughter percieves the same effect.
I agree totally with your assesments of a b comparisons. I prefer now to do comparisons via musicians themselves. I have found that they corrolate to a much higher degree on which particular amp or other equipment they prefer. Who better to comment on how close your system sounds to a real instrument like a sax piano or drums.

Once, a friend came to me and said he has worked into a speaker factory
Not exactly speaker factory.... if i can remember was an amplifier factory that used to produce (assemble) speaker drives too.
That friend was the big technical boss there..into the assembling line.... and one day he asked another staff member, accounting manager or other administration guy that he wanted resistances, wire resistances to produce testing into the assembling line... he wanted the industry to buy resistances for his assembling line.
I do not remember, but i think people was testing using instruments or speakers and beeing noisy to the production line.... so..... he asked resistances to work as dummy load.
The administration man asked why to buy resistances when he could use the speaker coils...the industry was producing speakers too...so..... they had coils to use as load......
The man was wrong...coil outside magnet and not moving to cool down would burn immediately when receiving audio power.
I do not remember exactly, but as i am not telling names..no one will know the guy done that....i think the guy is not into the forum anymore...so...not giving names, nobody will feel offended.
Well.... the production line manager felt offended as the administration, the finance management...the "bureacrat" was creating problems and having doubts about his needs and having probable doubts about his competence and intelligence asking for something they had into the industry..... speaker coils were around in hundreds.
They were together...near one each other..into the assembly line..talking about and discussing.... other folks listening and watching..and them the technical manager ordered someone to install the coil into an amplifier input and the coil was burned in flames in a couple of seconds while receiving power.... was a shame to the administration guy..... he was ashamed in public... i found this criminal...not a good thing to do to produce this trap to the guy to send shame on him... and i told this to the guy.... to the technical manager that creates the trap and was talking about that with pride.... telling me the story as he as the big guy and the other the big bandit.
You see how we behave...this is human... the defense mechanism inverts values and found arguments and reasons to explain our behavior and to turn it great!... the one was telling me, in a such way that he was the big heroe, the cowboy that has killed several indians with a single shot..when in the reality his behavior was bad, was a shame to the commanding staff, he send lame into his friend from the bosses group...and made that in public.
I told him that, if he was in my country...the one does that will face the employees outside the factory, and for sure will receive a lot of punches.... because this is not something a real man must do to another man.
But the guy insisted he was correct...he was the heroe.... and the other was the wrong one..the bandit...the bad guy.... the one that has the charge to take care of money to expent was doing innocently (without technical knowledge) trying to avoid factory to buy, probably, non needed resistance and the technical area guy had forgot that possibility to use the speaker coils.....
Our friendship has stopped in that moment...has finished, as he could not accept he was wrong.... that he was the bad guy into this story.... as usually happens the guy feel offended and goes out from the relatioship hurted.
You see the "defense mechanisms actuating"...they change the good to the evil and the opposite and i a very easy and fast way...now the bandit is innocent and the innocent is the bandit.
We have to take care of our judgments as we are not fair to judge.... we need A to B testing or something alike... to remove ourSELF from the equation.

If you need 10uF, you can try 2x22uF/50V, connected -/+/+/- (input and output at -, the center joint of +'s is biased to +15V with 2.2MegOhm resistor).
Also from Walt Jung's article, it is better to put f-cut at 10x the desired point. For example, if we want to have 20hz hpf, calculate for 2hz hpf.

Interesting the DC there..alike forcing to cross the condenser together the AC...some kind of different CCS applied.
Dc crossing depending the audio signal..... or audio tracked DC flow.....or audio synchronized dc flow, audio referenced lower impedance converter.... very interesting ideas...i like those possibilities very much!

There is probably nothing wrong with your hearing. Am I correct in inferring that your Macintosh tube amp sounds "clear" in the treble and the class A amps you've auditioned sound "muffled" by comparison?

Yes Homemodder...fully agreement.
In my special case.... the first amplifier i have made was in 1969... was a class A... and i was 18 years old.... good ears those days.
I have perceived it nice but mufled since those days... was a single stage, Germanium transistor driving a Senheiser headphone...the audio came from an Akai 4000Ds MKII, open reel tape recorder.
the recording was made using Shure dinetics 55V into a dual stage pre amplifier having RIAA equalization...so..... cartridge into amplifier and them to recording and listening the source (not the tape) using Senheiser headphone (professional saved from TV Globo fire) in series with the class A transistor colector...the cartridge was 500 ohms impedance..and the circuit designed to that impedance.... a single transistor..class A not to distort...colector voltage half from the supply voltage and the coletor load was the Senheiser cartridge.... you see...was something simple, to avoid many stages, to avoid things to distort audio..and this method sounded really great and special and i can remember that as a "big moment" in my life...when the fanatism started...i was young...good ears...and found a little bit mufled....so...i made the adjustment of the recording bias with another switch to allow more treble into the reproduction after recording....this was the way i had to correct the losses of brigthness into my reproduction.... with a flip of a switch that decrease the voltage to the recording bias oscilator.....doing this the tape recorded had increased treble level.
So...inside my system..into my home...i had good results...of course the tape was recorded with more treble level than normal... my tapes when reproduced into other amplifiers had more trebles than normal.

Yes Brian...but not only better trebles to the Macintosh
The Macintosh just smashed the class A in comparison.
The treble was something clear...but the sound stage.... the clarity, focus, definition, realism..quality.... no chance to any class D i have built.
The big problem is that i can be wrong...this was not made into comparison mode.... so... i THINK...and think so is not scientific.

It's always interesting when someone remarks that the Emperor is naked!
But how about this for an explanation: Almost everything on the speaker and headphone side has been voiced for playback with class A/B amps. (I assume, for the sake of the argument.)
Anyway, I think the most astonishing thing is all the things we can clearly hear (or feel in the general listening experience), but have such a hard time to try to measure!
BTW, I read somewhere that the power supply is way more important in class A than in A/B, so perhaps the problem lies there?

The man was Jewish..... scaped from concentration camp..... i love him very much....first because Jewish...i like them very much...my name, from Portugal, is a bird name..for sure jewish ancestor that accepted Christianism to survive during the middle ages.
The room was confortable... i was listening Wagner...interesting he used to listen that into the concentration camps...the extermination fields...interesting..this was victory for him...lost all family...absolutelly everybody..came to brazil very lonely and married here with a German descendent.
Througth the windows we had the vision of the Sugar Loaf... sunny day that was not bothering because the 12th floor had central air conditioning system... good food... some wine...not too much ligth despite the enormous living room (150 square meters) was surrounded by glasses from the top to the floor..but green glasses with solar filter.... well... i was very confortable sitted over a 2K dollares sofa.
The Macintosh was huge.... i could see Chromium into the chassis..something very pretty...the speaker was enormous...more than 15 inches and had an ouside shock absorber i do not know how that thing worked.... supply in another furniture.
You know...ambience...friendship.... good music...good talk...this could have offered that "feeling" of sonic superiority....now a days i cannot guarantee nothing about what happened 38 years ago.
My Portuguese family is Mergulhão....this is a diving bird...also a fish...a jewish name for sure...they go works with silver in Lisbon till those days.... knifes and forks to eat..those things.
