What replaces an IN541 diode?

In 1961 when the circuit discussed by the OP was built, what else was there to know other than Vf and Cjo? Unlike the germanium diodes illustrated in the chart above, the 1N541 is encased in a black composite -- so it would not likely be modulated by fluorescent lights.
