Post #2 for me. I read a previous post about modifying a Marantz CD80, but what about a Philips CD880?

I've done the no-oversampling and updated the tda1541 to a crown version.

What other inexpensive mods could a novice do next? Replace some of the capacitors? Replace the op amps?
The 4 op amps in it are NE5532P. Not sure what would be a drop-in replacement. ?

Any "suggestions for dummies" (especially those that point to any websites with easy to follow instructions) are appreciated.

Hello Loomis,

What's the point of asking if you give the answer yourself !?!?
Try making a better supply by putting an extra transformer in for analog supply. Replace the NE5532's for something sonically better like OPA2604. Yes I know they are a bit noisier but that's something you don't really hear as a difference from the NE5532.
Feed the opamps with + and - 15 V if they aren't already.
Replace all electrolytics with newer types. CD880 is old and caps of more than 10 years old aren't optimal anymore. Doesn't necessarely have to be Black Gate. BCComponents make good ( but not the best ) quality too.
Replace the crappy regulators for LM317/337 or better.Retrace the ground traces.
Put a better 11.289 MHz low jitter clock in it like Guido Tent's or Elso Kwak's. This again is the mod that makes 50 % in terms of quality of most mods.

I have only seen 1 CD880 inside, it may have been modified allready.
High speed soft recovery diodes on the analogue supply are always a reliable good sounding upgrade.
Many of the caps in the one I saw are already Elna Audio grade or Cerafine, do not go to crazy on caps to quick if this is what is in your unit.
Better clock is always a good thing to but sticking Blu Tack or similar (kids plasticine could even work) on the crystal, or even just a rubber grommit or wrapped rubber band over it will also help. (Only diff between the Arcam alpha and the alpha plus was a grommit).
