I've used Deft Lacquer but after about a year, it still smells (though much less). I am planning to resand and reapply some other brand of lacquer that hopefully does not smell as bad.
If I could do it all over again, I would have used Shellac which has no smell at all.

I prefer to use water-based polyurethane varnish. No solvent smell, low toxicity, easy to apply with a cheap foam brush, water clean up, fast drying. They don't build up fast, though, so at least three coats are needed.
Something wrong, if any paint still smells after drying.

I've used Deft for years -- did you get some water in it perhaps, or use a turps?
For a superb finish which definitely won't outgas VOC's after it's cured consider simple shellac flakes dissoved in methyl alcohol.

All laquer smells. At least when applying. I've used deft many times but never had it smelling after it was dry. Water based finishes wont wont smell as strong.
I have always had good results with deft in a spray can. for small projects.
I've finished many hardwood floors and never had that problem with it smelling after it dried. thats kinda odd. maybe the can you had was bad or our you applied it too thick, i dont know. thats really wierd.

I also use Deft lacquer on another pair of speaker but that doesn't smell as bad though.

ya it seems like maybe the can you had was bad or maybe when you applied the coat it made a chemical reaction with something that was left on the wood. I dont know, but yeah keep the next coat light and you should be fine.
