my room is about 10 - 12 ft long, .. i'd like to project a 5 - 6 ft wide image and the viewers will be sitting about 5 - 7 ft from the projected image.
i'm willing to do the research but wanted some starting points to research.
i was thinking of the pico projector, .. any opinions or alternatives?
thanks

well I came across two equations in my research and I will post them here
Projection Size = (Distance-Focal Length)*(LCD Size)
/Focal Length
Distance to Screen = (projection size)*(Focal Length) /LCD Size
+ Focal Length
Really all you need is the first equation. Of course you have to convert everything to similar units, i used inches....convert focal lenth (mm) to in and room size (ft) to in.
the only triplet lenses i have came by is the 80mm and 135mm...help ya out
80mm = 327mm focal = 12.874 in
135mm = 450mm focal = 17.717 in
Projection Size = (Distance-Focal Length)*(LCD Size)

Hi zobsky,
You might want to re-think the screen size, I can't speak from personal experience (yet🙂), but I've heard from others that you don't want a screen that big so close to the viewer! Could cause some nasty motion sickness 😱
If I recall correctly, one of the members here suggests a screen max size of half the viewing distance.

thanks for the advice, .. nice to know ...
taking that into account, .. which kind of projector setup would be best for that kind of room ( i could probably have the viewers back about 10 ft from the screen if i rearrange the furniture a bit 🙂 ?

Why? For me the purpose of a projector is to fill up your field of view. If I wanted something like that, I'd sit 8" away from my 21" monitor.
Mine is currently an inch or so under 5.3ft wide and the seating position is about 6-6.5' away from the screen, with the projector behind with a throw distance of about 7.5'.
My opinion on what to build, just build what you want. The lens' focal length will have the largest impact on projection size (well along with lcd size). Other than that, any design will work. If it'll be placed between the seating and screen, mount it on the ceiling and keep the design low-profile. If it'll be behind the seating, you may as well just make something tall and thin (somewhat like the "coffin" projectors standing up but with a mirror on the top). As long as you get all the focals lined up in the projector, ANY design you make or choose will work
Dont forget to take in account that the projector sticks out a certian distance from the wall so you owuld have to take that into consideration. Im not sure about what setup would help you....Im learning as well...Sorry cant help you out with a design but good luck.

well yeah, you have to find some way to focus the thing - be it moving the entire projector or just the lens
I personally like the way that diyprojectorcompany uses a single bolt that can be tightened or loosened to change the posisition of the lense

You'll notice I wasn't speaking authoritatively, just voicing the opinion of one of the other members http://www.diyprojectorphils.netfirms.com/Builder'sguide.htm
Of course its down to personal preference, I'm fairly sure I could handle a bigger image. I know I've felt a bit ropey sitting too close in the cinema watching fast moving pictures though...

Thats the only reason I'd go to a movie theater 😉
