Incidentally, this is the definition suggested by the NEC. National Electrical Code. There may be others that define ganged differently.
The National Electrical Code was first published in. 1895 and covered the fundamentals of of ganged switches. That's right! You guessed it. I have a bunch of electrician friends and worked with one for a couple of years in high school and college.

During my training we used to call them "Ganged push-button selector switch with exclusive interlock".
So you push one switch and the previously selected switch pops out.
