Is there a name for this type of pot, with three legs in a triangle like that and another lead in the middle?

That's for mechanical bracing. There's nothing connected to it as shown,
although it could be grounded for shielding.

Definitely not a standard part.

They may not have wanted to add a nut in front for some reason, so the brace was needed.

I think you're right. Anyway the rear one seems to be just a mounting thing, not a ground lead, so I'll just replace it with a common pot.

Perhaps the pot is holding the front escutcheon in place?

That should work well. Be sure to get the value and taper type right, and it's a go.
