What is this subwoofer alignment?

Of course it depends on your usecase. In an Array of 12/16 subwoofers this might summ up and the working frequency goes down. And you probably even add some sub sub woofers to fill the lowest frequencies.
But standing for it's own, 2-4 of these ... I would push it towards marketing.

A 4th order bandpass sub uses a rear sealed chamber and a front vented chamber, it rolls off at around 24dB per octave both above and below it's bandpass.
For a 4th order BP, the roll off on each side of the passband is closer to 12dB/octave.

A 6th order BP can have a 24dB/octave roll off on the low side and 12dB/octave on the high side, but I've designed a few that have roll offs closer to 18db/octave on either side of the passband.

Used for a low midrange it changes the frequency range ... and so it can make sense with some tight parameters!
*) You maybe get less vertical dimension - less beaming.
*) The gain is in the frequency range of the drivers!
But you will need the most SPL at the lower part of the range - so it doesn't help at all when you use this fullrange but with subwoofer and crossed over not to deep it can help.
*) After all it looks very professional ;-)
