Galileao - dropping lead balls from the tower of Pisa and discovering they fell at the same rate

Thanks Bonsai, your submission may generate some pertinent scientific discussion. 😎

To accurately measure the effect of gravity on free falling bodies, Galileo had to slow down the movement by using an inclined plane or ramp.

This was necessary because he lacked the technology to measure high speeds. The inclined plane permitted the use of a water clock to measure the required time intervals

Since free falling would be equivalent to a fully vertical ramp, he assumed that a ball rolling down a ramp would speed up in the exact same way as a freely falling ball would.

You can simulate his experiment here: https://www.maplesoft.com/support/help/maple/view.aspx?path=MathApps/GalileosInclinedPlaneExperiment

The Leaning Tower of Pisa story apparently appeared in a biography of Galileo written by one of his pupils. However, there appears to be no account by Galileo himself of such an experiment, and many historians believe it was a thought experiment.

Newton - splitting a white light beam into its constituent spectra

Prior to Newton's famous experiment (1665), it was thought that a prism coloured the light which passed through it.

Newton's contribution to the advance of scientific knowledge was to prove that a prism did not colour light.

After passing white sunlight through a prism, Newton isolated a single colour by allowing it to pass through a slit in a screen.

He then passed this light of a single colour, let's say green, through a second prism.

If a prism colours light then the green light should emerge from the second prism as a different colour. However, it remained green!

Newton had proved that white light was made up of colours mixed together, and the prism merely separated them.

In another experiment, Newton placed the second prism upside-down in the way of the light spectrum produced by the first prism. The band of colours combined again into white sunlight.

You can simulate his prism experiments here: https://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/newton/index.html

Cavendish - weighing the earth

Cavendish's goal was actually to measure the density of the Earth, but he called it 'weighing the world'.

His 'dumbbell' balance was constructed from a 6-foot wooden rod suspended by a metal fibre, with 2-inch-diameter lead spheres mounted on each end of the rod. The small spheres were attracted to 350-pound lead spheres brought close to the small spheres, and the angle of twist of the rod was used to calculate the force betwen a large and small sphere.

By measuring the force the large sphere of known mass exerted on the small sphere it could be compared with the force of the Earth acting on the small sphere. In this way the Earth can be calculated to be N times more massive than the large sphere.

Cavendish published his result in 1798 that the average density of the earth is 5.48 times that of water.

I happen to have briefly visited the "Leaning Tower of Pisa" !

Clearly the Civil Engineers utterly failed to do a Ground Study. Built on a Swamp! 🙄

Does anyone notice, as I do, that President Putain (sic) is looking a bit worse for the Weather?

I think his Days are numbered.

Yes, I’ve read about the inclined plane and the fact that he may not actually have done the leaning tower of Pisa experiment.

BTW the M-M experiment wasn’t to strictly confirm the dread of light, but that it was constant and did not change. It was I understand, along with Maxwell’s equations and insight, that triggered Einstein’s thought process about SR.

Can we have at least one place where we can forget the troubles of the world? You know the forum rules.

The "dread" of light? Or are you afraid of the dark, Bonsai? 😀

The Michelson-Morley (M-M) experiment was devised to study the effect of the postulated Ether on the speed of light.

When the Earth moves though the Ether it should feel a resistance similar to the air resistance a bike rider feels when moving through the air.

This resistance to the Earth's movement was called the "Ether wind".

It was thought that a beam of light passing sideways across the Ether wind and another beam travelling in the direction of the Ether wind would take different times to travel the same distance.

To the astonishment of M-M, there was no difference in the journey times of the two light beams.

To M-M, the null result indicated that either there wasn’t anything called Ether or the Earth must be dragging a blob of Ether around with it, in which case there wouldn’t be any Ether wind to detect.

"A reasonable replacement for Europe simply does not exist" Is a mantra originated from German political ecologists. Lies from lobbyist like Greenpeace proved to be bribed to agitate so.
The alternative does exist in France that has an electricity mix 70% nuclear with little depandency of Russian gaz.
All it takes is a stop to the political ecology non sense with wind turbines at 23% availability giving zilch 77% of the time, then asking to supplement with gaz and coal, a GIEC disaster.
Facts: Germany is 50% gaz dependant. Biden shale gaz will be 20 to 30% more expensive than Poutine gaz.
Open your eyes on what the real issues are and who has interests in what.
Sorry, I cannot ignore "Europe cannot replace Russian oil and gas" attributed to Vladimir Putin.
