I could have lived in a much simpler World if I had never discovered Quantum Mechanics. Everyday Miracles like walking on water would have sufficed. 🙂

It wasn't that clever a stunt really for a 9-y-o. In the very cold Winter of 1963 the nearby Shropshire Llandudno Canal froze over. I was out everyday defying Physics to walk over it. Naturally I didn't tell my Mother, because she would have been ALARMED! 😀

My Mother tended to let me get on with things. 😎

Anywhoo, Quantum Mechanics is RIGHT. Classical Mechanics is WRONG.

My recent discovery is that TIME is not an observable in Quantum Mechanics. Position, Momentum and (maybe) Energy might be.

But TIME continues to baffle me. A very slippery customer. 😱

I never knew, but it’s only going to look in the IR spectrum.
The whole point of the James Webb Space Telescope is that it will be able to look deeper into the universe by observing infared light.

It will be positioned at Lagrange point L2 to allow it to stay in line with the Earth as it moves around the Sun.

This will allow the satellite's large sunshield to protect the telescope from the heat of the Sun and the Earth that would otherwise swamp the very faint infrared signals from distant galaxies.

Yes I know Galu 🙂

The thought crossed my mind about how much we miss because of our limited colour vision when I read that.

Many animals see well into UV (insects, some frogs, birds etc) - we don't of course.

Viewing directly in IR (not 'tasting' like a snake) of course would mean we would have to run cold. Who knows, maybe there's a creepy crawly in the oceans of Enceladus that does just that.

People who follow events at diyaudio.com will be aware I have been indulging an old and rare talent for hacking computers recently. Many interesting discoveries made thanks to "The People's Operating System" known as Ubuntu Linux. Turns out the innocent looking Laptop Hard Drive I found hid many secrets. The affiliated P45 Motherboard or Intel E8400 Core2Duo Processor was broken and unfixable. But why the massive overkill on cooling fans?

Big clue was an install of a Windows utility known as GPU-Z, for overclocking graphics cards. Along with a notorious hacker's utility known as ATIFlash or WINFlash for making graphics cards more efficient, even to turn them into faster Radeon-Pro machines by a graphics bios upgrade. The giveaway was a very dubious batch file called mining.bat designed to make MS Windows 10 more focussed on certain tasks. Since the batch file turns off Windows Defender anti-virus protection, whilst being aware of the IP address of the downloader, it appears to be a pure Trojan Horse to me, designed to steal your hard-mined Crypto-Currency.

I leave you to draw your own conclusions. But I want nothing to do with such activities. I will wipe this hard-drive as quickly as possible and install the latest Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS. 😎

Back to the Physics. I have become alarmed at the complete muddle that is Modern Particle Physics. Just when we thought we knew what a nucleus is, we find we don't even have a clue what a Proton is. A lot of Pions, for sure, but quite incalculable IMO. And what is inside a Quark? More stuff! It's looking like plum pudding all the way down. 😕

Back in the good old days, hacking was a respected art for us to dig in and find out how things worked, improve them, share our skills. We called the bad guys, "crackers" and the good guys "hackers"

So, to clarify:

Although the JWST will look primarily at the infrared, it will be sensitive to visible light from 0.6 micrometres extending up to the mid-infrared at 28 micrometres (see attached spectrum to visualise the coverage).

I doubt Quarks are elementary. I have a suspicion that no particles exist, but are only the observable effect of something we do not know.

The Standard Model explains a lot of things. Neat and tidy until whatever is causing the effects we call dark mater and dark energy showed it's ugly head.

To envision time-space we draw pictures of a 2 dimensional plane with an object warping it, but our understanding is it is 3 dimensional space so any drawn plane will have the same warpage which we have trouble visualizing. Now add in that everything carrying mass is warping space around it. Darn lumpy. Easier to explain with math.

Remember, as the models get more and more complicated, nature seems to prefer the easy way out. If it is too complicated, it is probably wrong. Let me define wrong as "our best description if the data, even if the reality is different"

They emphasize IR as it will penetrate dust clouds. Visible will not.
I can't wait. I suspect it will be like Hubble, we don't know what we don't know and will discover.

I was watching something on black holes. It suggested in the core there was no space between particles. Well, if particles exist ( I doubt) then they have to have dimension and shape. Unless one of several simple geometries ( cube, pyramid etc.) there has to be space between the particles, so contradictory. To have a singularity, particles have to have no dimension. Kind of by definition. Or is the truth, there is a ever decreasing but not zero space. Or does space/time shrink too?

Thinking harder requires something stronger than coffee. I am not sure legal ones are sufficient 😀

It's so..ethereal. :scratch2:
How's that for obfuscation!

I was referring as to why they were using only IR - because you can see through the dust - I did not know they were only equipping it with IR

🙂

You should have a chat with a biologist some time!

If you've ever seen a (partial) chart of the metabolic pathways in a human (any animal for that matter) you would be astounded at how complex it is. That's why evolution takes so long. This stuff takes millions of years for nature work it out.

Evolution of the universe is governed by increase of entropy, more disorder.
Whereas evolution of life is governed by decrease of entropy, more order.
It is odd that the laws of nature are not used the same, life evolution is based on trial and error and randomness, universe evolution is based on what ? by the way.

Your concerns for my Health move me deeply, and I thank you:

But as my Mother said, it's not the Coff that carries you off, but the Coffin they carry you off in! 😀

Made it to 99. Bless her. 🙂

Watching the news, we have far more worrying things to worry about. The OmiGod Variant! 😱
