Not many people know this, but the potentially second finest Artist in the history of the Universe was Edward King of Portsmouth, UK. History will judge.

I visited Portsmouth Museum only the other day to review his fine pictures of our fighting and plucky home town to refresh my memory of his wonderful palette of colours. Admired by no less than Vincent Van Gogh.

Alas, the pictures are gone. Who knows where? Current exhibition is about Sherlock Holmes. The naive student curators were unaware of his significance in the Art World. This is a scene of Portsmouth High Street in 1941, after the Luftwaffe had been bombing us to ****.

Happily, Hermann Goering had merely removed some very ugly buildings to reveal the lovely Italianate architecture of St. Thomas' Cathedral. It is still there. I love this town.

On the subject of our late lamented Her Majesty, all I can say is we loved her:

Film star good looks as a young woman. Agreed?

I was there, in Durgapur India in 1961. My Dad costed the £105M steel works.

Back to Physics. Today, a scurrilous Rag was being distributed on the streets of Portsmouth by the name of "The Truth.". Claims the moon landings never happened. Claims the Coronavirus doesn't exist. Back page was an ad by David Icke, clearly madness.

I watched Apollo 13 through my telescope. I presume Tom Hanks did too:

Best Regards, Steve in Portsmouth UK.

Without stirring up any controversy, Disco-Pete it is USUAL at funerals to say some nice things about the deceased. Anything else is considered, freankly, CHURLISH...

Her Majesty was of course, Head of State of Canada. I am sure Ma'amalade sandwiches are popular in your neck of the woods. Certainly sales are up 46% this week in the UK.

We often wondered what She kept in that famous handbag. Now we know!

It has caused a problem for the Royal Parks, since food offerings alongside flowers encourage RATS.

Marmalade Sandwiches For Later.jpg

Nevertheless, Her loyal and grieving subjects find it immensely funny and appropriate!

Furthering your education, Vincent Van Gogh and Edward King both experienced mental troubles and were institutionalised. Painting was their therapy.

Having cleared all that up, we can move back to Cosmology! 😎

My apologies. One can only hope to be lied about after they're gone.

In that case you have to wonder what they admired about each other.

It wasn't insanity that drove them to paint.

I am a firm Believer that we must work with The Universe as we find it.

As a South Portsmouthian, I CALCULATE and TIME my healthy swim in the Sea (The Solent) every Day.

This includes many Mathematical variables. I watch the phases of the Moon. Calculate whether we are on BST or GMT. Check the temperatures. It's complicated even for a person as Mathematically gifted as myself!

So far, so good. We get two peak and low tides every day. I have not drowned or been dashed onto the nearby rocks of Selsey Bill so far.

I was down on the Beach at 11.30 this morning. Perfect swimming conditions. No appreciable current. 3 hours before High Tide!

I have cracked it.

As has North Portsmouthian, Penny Mordaunt.

But TBH, she doubtless swims in the Mountbatten Pool. A far easier calculation. 🙂

As most people know, my greatest strength is Mathematics. I have little time for the unproven and vague notions of Physics and Cosmology.

Frankly, nobody knows what is going on with Black Holes, the Quantum Plasma of Gluons and Quarks, or even what a Higgs Boson might be! An expanding Universe leaves me similarly confused. General Relativity boils down to Causality in the end.

My training is Mathematics. You know, adding and subtracting. Occasionally squares and cubes. My teachers frequently admired my ability to substitute complex variables into the indices of indefinite integrals.

How did I learn this? The answer may surprise you. It was playing and scoring DARTS at the local pub!

What you need to know about this game, is the board itself, the Rules of the Game:

Makes you very sharp on arithmetic calculation. I made that 17 and 14 and 25. Total 56. To be subtracted from 301 0r 501 to check out. Hope it helps.

Best Regards from Steve in Portsmouth, UK. 🙂
