It's been relentlessly hot in Portsmouth for months for some reason. 21C! I have been needing frequent siestas. 😡
Bring on those dark Winter months and pullovers and gloves and woolly hats! 🙂
Galu will share my dismay at the price of LED lightbulbs these days. £9 for two! And they don't last 15 years. It's a lie.
Whilst investigating the Zeeman effect I have solved the question of how many Physicists it takes to change a lightbulb... 😎
Hydrogen-Like Atoms:Sodium
I think Disco-Pete on 120V AC is best placed to try this cheaper fix. Me and Galu should wire two in series with our 240V AC. Can't wait! I wonder if it works with pickled Onions too?

I’ll have to wade through those lecture notes later next week - out for a few days. Thanks for the explanation

I bought LED spots and candles from Home Bargains well before Covid struck and they haven't let me down. Prior to that, halogen lamps were failing as regularly as clockwork. I met some resistance from SWMBO in converting to LED lamps as she thought they would affect her vision. Fortunately, this hasn't been the case. The lamps were around £3.00 and £2.00 each respectively when I bought them, but I haven't been in the store since the pandemic to check the current stock and prices - although I append a current example from their website.Galu will share my dismay at the price of LED lightbulbs these days. £9 for two! Buy e-Luminate B22 806 Lumens Warm White LED (Case of 6) at Home Bargains
P.S. I go for the warm white for general use in the home as the daylight ones definitely do affect my wife's eyes - although I find daylights great at my workbench!

P.S. Anyone who knows their onions would not get themselves into a pickle by performing that bright spark's experiment!
Be warned UK kids - do not try that at home.

What is the government expanding into?
So yesterday the government made masks mandatory again, here in British Columbia.
Then they announced the masks aren't good enough. For those who have already received their complete vaccination shots, we must now show a proof of innoculation card before being permitted into a store to buy sustenance.
Only one problem here. The geniuses in the lawmakers haven't issued cards. There's an app reputed to be available soon for phone downloads and code displays, but a Quebec based supplier of a similar product says it is easy to use the app as a gateway to rob any previously private information.
This only 2 years or so from the Prime Minister saying doing away with cash would be a great idea for Canada, because the banks could collide with the government and track citizens with the debit cards replacing cash.
Did I mention I haven't been issued a proof of innoculation card, only two disposable paper stickers?
I know this may not be the correct forum for this statement, but I'm covering as many sites as I think of.
In any scenario, I don't think this is what my grandfather left two brothers behind, dead at Juno in World War 2.

I share your frustration with all these shenanigans, but the moderators would rather we don't discuss such things on the forum.
P.S. I don't own a smartphone and look forward to the powers that be supplying me with one and paying for its monthly subscription costs!

Since when is it mandatory to use cyberspace? Our premier criminal lawyer here in my town was recently showcased in our daily newspaper. Being a bit eccentric, he prides himself on not owning a computer or even a cell phone. He has an old dial phone in his house. A very successful lawyer here.

An announcement was made in 2019 that UK analogue land lines will be converted to an internet-based version by December 2025.
In typical fashion, three quarters of phone and broadband companies are currently unaware that this is happening, according to a survey by an Internet Service Provider!
Because the new system runs off the internet, you won’t be able to make calls without an internet connection at home - so tough cheddar if you are a luddite!
The current analogue landlines have their own dedicated electrical supply that allows users of traditional phones to make emergency calls even during a home electricity power cut.
Because the new system will work off your home electricity you won't be able to dial for an ambulance during a power cut - that's progress for you!
To make up for this loss, phone companies are advising that you should use a mobile phone as a backup - that's simplification for you!

Is your answer one of the following?Whilst investigating the Zeeman effect I have solved the question of how many Physicists it takes to change a lightbulb... 😎
The current theory is one - but with new theories being put forward all the time, and with new experimental data, the old theory may be discredited!
None - once they have observed that it is out, it will already have changed.
If the light bulb is a perfect sphere, one. The solution for a light bulb of arbitary shape is left to the reader.
Eleven - one to do it and ten to co-author the paper.
😀
I question whether anything but gold-plated electrics will last 25 years, but £1.59 for 806 lumens of warm white LED (2700K) seems a deal. They are £2.10 at Tesco.
But a question mark on running costs. 9W?
My latest £3.15 Tesco jobbies only consume 10W whilst providing 1521 Lumens of warm white LED. I am taking the cool white LEDs back to the shop. I hate that stark and sky polluting (4000K) light. They ruin my astronomy efforts.
All a very complex business. The old tungsten bulbs (92W!) were fairly non-polluting. Fluorescent bulbs (15W?) contain Mercury and should be disposed of carefully. They also flicker, have a greenish spectrum and warm up slowly. Am not aware of pollution issues with LED beyond plastic. But they do use a fluorescer to convert ultraviolet light to the visible spectrum, so must leak ultraviolet.

It's actually a daylight compact fluorescent lamp (cfl) that I use for reading, modelling and fixing electronics in my man shed.
It has no discernible flicker and, unlike the first generation of cfl, no discernible warm up time.

No doubt about that.
On top of this, nowadays fluorescent tubes have the efficiency of LED without the poor reliability of the electronics associated to LED lamps.
Efficiency of fluorescent tubes is well hidden in the LED business.

What happened to CFLs?

Not all electronic fluorescent ballasts are created equal. I’ve had BOTH of the ballasts in my electronics workshop fail before the original sets of bulbs did. Within two weeks of each other. The funny thing is that I was a 10 year run - often 10 hours a day for months at a time. I went to change the bulbs, and I was shocked to discover the problem was the ballasts and not 10 year old light bulbs. The security lights (24/7) are still on their original bulbs and ballasts (different brand of ballast, same batch of bulbs). They have yet to go out. Not constantly power cycling really does extend bulb life. Never had the old T12’s last that long, but the T8’s sometimes do (but not always). I’ve never had the electronics in an LED fixture last any 10 years. Usually they start acting stupid in 2 or 3. Groups of LED chips start flashing on and off, they develop startup problems and won’t cone on at all half the time. The longest lasting ones seem to be the modern screw-in ones that go into old incandescent fixtures. No rhyme or reason as to what brand is best - it’s the same roll of the dice for GE and Philips as something you never heard of (and Sylvania and Osram are Philips so it’s really only those two). I doubt the major brands have anything at all to do with the manufacturing anymore anyway.
What happened to CFLs?
They killed themselves. Most of the ones I used lasted about as long as incandescents before the electronic ballasts failed. Even 2 to 3 years on an LED was better.
