At worst i would try a plasterboard/insulation type place

I'm not sure I should answer that , since I really don't know other than by hearsay, and also since there are several types. But guessing/speculating I'd say it is more isothermailzing than damping. More like polyfill, that is.

Open cell foam and polyfill are almost always used together so aren't they complementing each other?

www.goldenfleeceinsulation.com.au have a 60/40 wool/polyester blend, might be interesting as it won't settle like pure wool.

Madisound in the US sells wool for $10.50/lb, Acousta-stuff for $9.50/lb, polyfill for $3.60/lb, and polyester batting.

Wool is unique; because it is made up of overlapping scales, it has more air friction by far than the synthetics. Acousta-Stuf attempts to do something similar with many fine crimps of the polyester strands. It is about 1/2 way between wool and normal polyester in effectiveness.
Bugs don't munch it though.
