What is homosote?

All members,

I came across this reference to homosote -- some sort of soft-stiff material that can be discretely used in building loudspeaker boxes. I hope I have spelled the word correctly. Does anybody know what this material is called in India and whether it is available here at all?

Homosote is a very soft board the size of gypsum board (4'x8')
it is made from recycled newspapers I think. It is used under flooring sometimes to cut down on sound transmitted to spaces below due to impact.Often it is used as cheap bulletin boards.

Now that you mention it, it might make very good lining glued in speaker boxes. Pretty much worthless for the box itself because it is very flexible.

I wonder if this is what we know as insulation board in the UK. It is brown, very long fibred, and very soft, you can actually tear it with your hands. It is available in 1/2 and 3/4 inch sheets, and as Variac says, is often used as sound insulation material in walls and floors. It is probably too leaky to use for cabinets, and again as Variac says, not stiff enough to be used on its own.

I think that because of the links between our two countries, it may possibly be called the same in India.

"real" homosote is grey - model railroaders use it a lot for roadbed for sound deadening. I could never find it most places I lived, I think it's regional.

I think I know the brown stuff you're talking about - I bet either one would work OK.

It's a neat idea.
